[VIDEO] Non-Billionaire Residents of Billionaires’ Row Co-op Told to Pony up $280M or Get Lost

Co-op apartments in a luxury doorman building on Billionaires’ Row are selling for as low as $100,000 for a studio and $659,000 for a three-bedroom penthouse with a terrace.

But the glitch in the only-in-New York scenario is that owners in the 324-unit building must pay a combined $280 million to buy the land under the structure, or face an additional $26 million a year in ground rent on top of the current $4.4 million a year. If they don’t cough up, they face losing their homes.

Carnegie House at 100 W. 57th St., at the corner of Sixth Avenue, is a 21-story, gray brick structure that resembles many other early 1960s, middle-class Manhattan apartment buildings. Its “luxury” status seems modest compared with neighboring giants, such as the 1,550-foot-tall Central Park Tower to the west and 111 W. 57th St. to the east; units in both new projects cost up to $30 million.

[WATCH] How the Landlord’s Worst Nightmare Could Protect Millions of New Yorkers

New Yorkers pay some of the highest rents in the nation — and are among the most vulnerable to being evicted with little notice. For years, the city’s real estate industry has spent a fortune exerting its influence in the State Capitol, leaving tenants largely at its mercy. Meanwhile the cost of living continues to rise and the number of rent-regulated apartments continues to dwindle.

Unlike in Oregon, California and New Jersey, landlords in most of New York State can jack up rents or refuse to renew a lease without cause. A little-known bill in Albany, known as Good Cause Eviction, could change the lives of millions of New Yorkers who are simply trying to get by. If passed, it would regulate rent increases and require landlords to renew leases for most tenants. In the video above, Jeff Seal, a comedian and housing advocate, takes an unconventional approach to educating New York tenants about a law that he believes will offer more security to millions of renters and working-class New Yorkers.

I love saving and investing and living in this tiny 80 square foot apartment with dirt cheap rent has helped me save and invest so much money. I just think people only view success as someone living in a big house with a nice car and I actually think that's misleading because what it takes to succeed is often living well below your means. Hopefully this gets people excited about tiny living. 80 square feet is the legal limit for how small an apartment can be in New York City. That's my understanding anyway.

Dave is a creative writer who lives inside the iconic Astor Place Cube in New York City. The cube's 8X8 panels add up to 64 square feet which adds up to 512 cubic feet. For Dave, who is 5'8", that is plenty of space to move around, write, cook, sleep, work out and even play guitar. Dave uses a bicycle generator to power up the lights and a handful of electronic gadgets.

Its by Union Square, New York University and a host of other cool bars and restaurants in the East Village, in Lower Manhattan NYC. Check out this small nyc apartment which is really tiny. Small new york city apartments are all over the place, but to me this one's location is its saving grace.
