The Billion Oyster Project is a program in partnership with Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Environmental Protection that has a long term goal of reintroducing a billion live oysters into the once-rich New York Harbor and surrounding waters. In this video from Zagat, see how the project works to make a difference in New York Harbor's ecosystem.

The Billion Oyster Project is trying to do some good with the oyster shells leftover from your dinner. The organization collects empty oyster shells that would usually be sent to the landfill, and returns them to the rivers surrounding the city. The goal: to restore the habitat so that a new generation of bivalves can flourish naturally.

Each day, the 11-acre Sims Municipal Recycling in Sunset Park processes over 450 tons of recycled materials through an amazing automated process involving air jets and conveyor belts. In this video from our friends at Insider, see how the advanced tech works to keep New York City streets clean.

The Sims Municipal Recycling Facility in Brooklyn is the largest recycling facility in the country. In just one day, the facility sees about 800 tons of recyclable materials. That's the equivalent of nearly 100 elephants. Because of the amount of materials the center is able to process, it's helped remove more than 200,000 garbage trucks from NYC's streets.

The Gowanus E-waste Warehouse is a large facility in Brooklyn that allows New Yorkers to drop off and recycle discarded, old, and/or broken electronics for free. The goal of the warehouse is to reduce the contamination that the toxic electronic parts would add to our landfills, and ultimately, our environment. Learn more about the warehouse in this video from our friends at BRIC TV.

The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse is on a mission to divert as much electronic waste from landfills as possible.Through their recycling program, NYC residents can drop off electronic waste free of charge. Some electronics can be refurbished and sold at their Re-use Store, providing low-cost electronics to the community, while others are kept to provide props to filmmakers.

Back in February, we shared this incredible scale model of Manhattan that used discarded electronics, chips, and hot glue. Zayd Menk, the artist who created the piece, recently put out this behind-the-scenes, making-of video showing how it all came together. Check it out!

this is what midtown manhattan at the .0635 : 100 scale looks like. the meticulous construction of this 165 X 80 cm model took zimbabwe-based artist, zayd menk, 3 months of spare-time-googling and repetitive-calculating, sawing and gluing. in all, it took 263 hot glue sticks, 11 CPUs, an unprecedented number of wikipedia searches, 27 motherboards, 10 CRT monitor motherboards, 15 batteries, 2 clocks, 4 watches, 3 hard drives, 3 graphics cards, 4 audio cards, 7 power supplies, 13 floppy disk readers, a lot of maths, much patience, ‘a few other bits and pieces’ — and yes, before you ask, the empire state building does light up via 4 micro LEDs.
