WCS's Run for the Wild is back at the Bronx Zoo! This year's 5K run/walk takes place on Saturday, April 25. We’ll have two start times, one for runners at 8:00 a.m., and a second for our Family Fun Run/Walk at 8:45 a.m. This year, WCS's Run for the Wild is inspired by rhinos. With their striking pre-historic appearance, powerful builds, and distinctive horns, these animals are iconic and beloved. They're also endangered.

According to my mom, my grandfather loved going to see bicycle races in New York City, especially Italian racers. This home movie shows bicycle racing at the Coney Island Velodrome in Brooklyn NY, circa 1930. The movie was filmed by my grandfather, William Whitman, Sr., and the music is by my daughter, Anna Haas. Please share widely.

Can you beat a crosstown M14 bus while walking? Due to heavy traffic, bus lane parkers, frequent stops, and other reasons, a group of frustrated pedestrians from Transportation Alternatives recently set out to show how slow the bus really is, racing the bus from 1st Avenue to 8th Avenue along 14th street. They lost, but only by 5 seconds. Watch this video from our friends at Gothamist for more.

Transit advocates hoping to speed up the city's notoriously slow buses have long pointed out that it's often faster to walk (or big-wheel) than to schlep through traffic-clogged streets on a dawdling bus. On Wednesday morning, a few dozen pedestrians tested the theory, power-walking alongside the M14 bus as it chugged along 14th Street from Avenue A to the west side of Union Square. In the end, the bus beat the bipeds, though only by a few seconds.

The 2018 NYC Marathon has come and gone, and I'm sure you have seen tons of clips about the winners and the record number of finishers. But there is more to see. Local comedian, filmmaker, and Gothamist video producer Jeff Seal recently made this funny video highlighting some of the NYC Marathon's overlooked athletes: the New Yorkers trying to cross the street.

I love watching the NYC Marathon—I watch it every year. I find it genuinely heart-warming to see New Yorkers come out to cheer on their friends and also complete strangers from all over the world. I love it when like, an Italian spectator sees an Italian runner and then they have a quick exchange in Italian really quickly. I literally get choked up when I see that. But I also always find it so funny watching everyone just try cross the street. You couldn't choreograph a more perfect physical comedy routine. They have a very specific and clear objective: to cross the street and not get hit by a runner.

On this past Sunday morning, a magical food/fitness event took place in Brooklyn at Fort Greene Park. At the 9th Annual NYC Pizza Run, over a hundred runners showed up with empty bellies and colorful costumes, ready to run a 5k while eating delicious pizza slices in-between laps.

The NYC Pizza Run is a challenge in which participants aim to complete a 5K run while stopping to eat two slices of pizza at checkpoints throughout the course.

Viewing NYC received a free ticket to attend, so I decided to participate in the race as I love running, and coincidently, I also love pizza! (Who doesn't?! amirite?)

The race was well-organized, with check-in and number pickup quick and efficient. Sponsored by Planet Fitness amongst others, there was a bunch of swag available with their logo, including large tubs full of bottled water. Pre-race tattoos (temporary) were given out, and many runners showed up in pizza couture: foam pizza-suits, pizza-printed jammies, pizza socks, hats, capes, and other festive costumes.

Participants in the race had to run a lap counter-clockwise around Fort Greene Park, eat a slice of pizza, run another lap, eat another slice, then run a final lap to finish the race. The only requirement is that you had to have the slice completely inside your mouth before moving on to the next lap. Finishing in just over 18 minutes, the first place runner apparently was able to shove the entire slice into his mouth in one go, allowing him to run while chewing. I did not adopt that strategy.

While I certainly ate fast as I wanted to continue running the course, the crust portion of the pizza was tough to get down. This says nothing about the excellent flavor and slices provided by Pizza by Certé, it's just tough to eat a pizza crust quickly when sweating buckets and dehydrated. None-the-less, my efforts got me 6th place in the race with a time of 20:30ish!

Swag bags at the finish line included t-shirts, a tote, a coupon for a free post-race beer, head and armbands, and of course, bottled water. I would definitely run again, and with next year being the 10th anniversary of the event, I'm sure there is something excellent in the works. Be sure to sign up for the mailing list on NYC Pizza Runs to stay in the loop for next year's race!
