[VIDEO] Tourist in Your Own Town Explores Prospect Park

The New York Landmarks Conservancy's Tourist in Your Own Town series explores some of New York’s best hidden gems as well as some of the classic iconic landmarks. In this video from the series, we take a look at Prospect Park, the famous Brooklyn Park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted’s and Calvert Vaux.

Take a look at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, a scenic landmark that covers almost 600 acres and contains splendid sculptures, historic memorials, and incredible architecture. Designed in 1865, the park is considered Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's masterpiece.

Prospect Park is a milestone in the 19th-century movement to create naturalistic parks in America's cities as a response to increased industrialization. James Stranahan initially conceived the park in 1864.

A few highlights of the video include Grand Army Plaza, the 1857 Litchfield Villa, the Lefferts House, the Boathouse, Concert Grove and the Oriental Pavilion.

[WATCH] Take a Virtual Tour of Prospect Park's Landmarked Lefferts Historic House

In April 2020, Prospect Park Alliance's Nick Lockyer—House Manager of the Lefferts Historic House—gave Turnstile Tours a virtual look at one of New York City's oldest historic homes. Built by a Dutch family in the 18th-century farming village of Flatbush, Lefferts Historic House features a working garden, historic artifacts, period rooms and exhibits.

This Interactive Map Details Over 12,000 of Prospect Park's 200 Different Tree Species

TreeKeeper is a new interactive website from the Prospect Park Alliance that details and maps over 12,000 of the park's 30,000+ trees. Made possible with an Urban Forestry Grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the site allows you to see the impact any given tree has on the environment in categories like greenhouse gas benefits, air quality benefits, water benefits, energy benefits, and property benefits.

Prospect Park Alliance recently surveyed nearly half of the park's 30,000 trees, through a a $75,000 Urban Forestry Grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Using the TreeKeeper Interactive Map, you can identify all of the mapped trees in Prospect Park. These currently number over 12,000, with interior woodland areas of the park still to come.
