LoopNYC is an ambitious urban planning proposal from architecture/engineering firm EDG in which lanes on Manhattan's major cross-streets (14th, 23rd, 42nd 57th, 86th and 110th) as well as lanes on the FDR and West Side Highway are reserved for self-driving, autonomous cars. EDG claims that these specialized "fast-lanes" would allow a commute from midtown to downtown and back in just 11 minuted, down from 40 minutes currently.

Also part of the proposal, LoopNYC has Broadway and Park Avenue completely blanketed in a public, pedestrian-only park. Running from Battery Park to Union Square, then Splitting up Park Ave and Broadway until 59th Street, the park would allow a car-free route from Lower through Midtown Manhattan.

Architecture/engineering firm Edg has created a proposal for "Loop NYC," a driverless transit plan that would free up nearly all of Broadway and Park Avenue for park space, reclaiming 24 miles of street to be used as uninterrupted walking paths and bike lanes.

In response to the swathe of supertall luxury residential towers rising in New York, local studio Oiio has proposed a conceptual skyscraper that loops over to boast length rather than height. The Big Bend would be formed from a very thin structure that curves at the top and returns to the ground

If constructed, the Big Bend would not only be the "longest" building, but would also be the third tallest in the world, and the tallest in NYC at 2,000 feet.

If you’ve been on a subway lately, you know that New York City’s infrastructure is already beyond capacity. And guess what — the population is expected to rise from about 8.2 million to 9 million by 2040.

With that in mind, Crain’s asked 12 architecture, design and real estate firms to conjure some big ideas to deal with the projected crunch.

Their responses ranged from SLCE Architects suggestion of adding multi-use buildings to underused schoolyards, to Dattner Architects proposal to convert waste-transfer stations into eco-friendly fuel producers.

[&hellip] the route was chosen because it is the most efficient in terms of cost, total length and travel time. Total travel time from Elm Park to the World Trade Center PATH station would be 33 minutes, including a 6-minute gondola ride.

Originally based on the success of the The High Line, co-founders Dan Barasch and James Ramsey have been planning the park for several years, and have only recently been given the chance to submit their proposal on how to use the uncontested underground space.

The New York City Economic Development Corp. (EDC) this past summer conditionally approved a plan to turn an abandoned trolley station below Delancey Street into the world’s first underground park. Now, for the first time, we’re getting a look at the winning proposal to create the Lowline on the Lower East Side.

Engineering and construction firm AECOM has proposed a massive waterfront redevelopment project for Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood.

The ambitious project envisions over 45,000 new units of housing, commercial buildings, infrastructure and a new 1 train tunnel from lower Manhattan.

If the project comes to fruition, a new residential neighborhood almost double the size of Battery Park City and several times as large as Hudson Yards on Manhattan's far West Side—the biggest development project currently underway in the city—would be created.

Big Foot Developers recently proposed this crazy conceptual rendering of a glass cube restaurant suspended by steel cables above the abandoned Glenwood Power Plant on the Hudson River.

The floating restaurant is a restaurant that hangs from two smoke stacks of the historic Glenwood power plant in the Hudson river and gives the people of New York an unpredictable new dinner experience. It's a restaurant that makes your blood rush from the excitement of being floating up high, that fills your emotional heart with the incredible views of the city from a point of view you can almost never get and the exclusiveness of being in a unique and select top restaurant in the world.

If you have ever tried to bike across the Brooklyn Bridge, you know just how unsafe it is to both bikers and pedestrians. Absent-minded tourists often wander directly into the bike lanes, causing collisions and injury. Locals have to walk into bike lanes to avoid crowds of tourists stopped in the middle of the walkways. Something has to change.

A new proposal from the New York City Department of Transportation would make the existing walkway almost entirely bike lanes, while moving the bulk of pedestrians to a new platfom above the current automotive lanes.

The idea is to widen the pathway by building on top of the steel girders that run over the bridge’s main roadways. Most of the wooden deck for walking and biking is four feet below the girders, so the expansions would be at a higher grade than the current path. Trottenberg said DOT will also explore expanding the concrete approaches to the wooden deck on both the Brooklyn and Manhattan sides.

The Brooklyn Bridge has certainly been altered over its lifetime to accomodate changing traffic patterns and means of transportation. With bike ridership on the rise, is it time to prioritize bike lanes?

Green skyscrapers may very well become the norm of a self-sufficient future thanks to New York City (Steady) State Project. Terraform, an independent urban research center headquartered in NYC, began this project to investigate the constant tug of war between the approaching need for sustainable practices and stubborn political boundaries, and whether this tension can be relieved.

The team, led by Michael Sorkin, hopes to inspire debate, design and development by getting information out of the hands of environmental scientists and into the hands of civilians around the globe through a series of encyclopedia-style publications. Each volume focuses on one of the key aspects of sustainable urbanism: food, waste, air, water, climate, and movement.
