Add "rising ocean levels" to the list of New Yorkers' concerns, because the city is sinking, a new study finds. The study says that New York City is literally sinking under its own weight. “We can’t sit around and wait for a critical threshold of sea level rise to occur, because waiting could mean we would be missing out on taking anticipatory action and preparedness measures,” said Andrew Kruczkiewicz, a senior researcher at Columbia University’s Climate School.
The data team at Property Club recently analyzed their data in order to find out which neighborhoods around New York City have the largest share of millennials. It turns out that most of them are in Manhattan, not Brooklyn. Here are some key takeaways:

• Financial District's 10005 leads our ranking, boasting a 67% Millennial share.
• 7 of the top 10 millennial hotspots in New York City are in Manhattan.
• LIC's 11109 is primarily dominated by the 20 to 39 age group

For the past four hundred years, the island that so many New Yorkers call home has been changed by the people who lived there. Manhattan is now a super metropolis with 8 million inhabitants, but take a look at the earliest known map of New Amsterdam, as it was then called, and you’ll see a very different island.

Data scientist John Burn-Murdoch recently created this fascinating animated bar chart showing the top-ten most-populous cities in the world from 1500 through present day. New York City had its time in the spotlight, ranking #1 from 1925 when it overtook London, to 1954 when Tokyo grew at an incredibly fast pace. Check it out!

In a detailed study titled Here Grows New York, Columbia University student Myles Zhang used publicly-accessible data from the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress to create this fascinating animation showing the growth of New York City's five boroughs from 1609 through present day.

This animation illustrates the development of NYC’s street grid and infrastructure systems from 1609 to the present-day, using geo-referenced road network data and historic maps. The resulting short film presents a series of “cartographic snapshots” of NYC’s built-up urban area at intervals of every 20-30 years history.

The Manhattan Population Explorer is an interesting interactive map that shows the ebb and flow of people who commute to and from Manhattan on any given day. Using several sources of publicly accessible data to create the map, LA-based freelance data specialist Justin Fung started the project to see how so many people move in and out at various times of day.

The visualization you see here is a model of the dynamic population of Manhattan, block-by-block and hour-by-hour for a typical week in late Spring. The model is currently fixed to your local time. The population estimates are the result of a combination of US Census data and a geographic dispersion of calculated net inflows and outflows from subway stations, normalized to match population daytime and nighttime estimates provided by a study from NYU Wagner.

Check out the full map to play around with the data.
