Created by one of our favorite local filmmakers Nicolas Heller, the short film is a heartwarming profile of a beloved East Village man.

For the past year, Mike has devoted his 45-minute lunch break to something he hasn’t done since Highschool... Painting. Follow Mike as he takes you on a journey through his shop full of characters and the storage unit he’s turned into his personal art studio, adding another uniquely New York charm to one of The city’s best kept secrets.

Vincent Van Gogh's 1889 Starry Night is one of the most famous and recognizable paintings in the world. Many have seen it, but do you really know anything about it, or its creator? In this short video from New York Magainze, watch as an art critic helps passersby in the New York City subway explore the painting.

Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night is one of the most recognizable paintings in all of art history, and has become a textbook example of “post-impressionist” painting. But its aesthetic beauty is often intertwined with the tortured life story of its creator — he painted it while staying in an asylum, only a few months before his death, a rumored suicide.

Visit "Starry Night" in person at the Museum of Modern Art.

Pablo Picasso's Guernica is one of the most famous paintings in the world. Because Picasso never elaborated on his specific choices for the details within the painting, it is one of the most analyzed and discussed paintings as well. In this short video from New York Magainze, watch as an art critic helps passersby in the New York City subway explore the painting.

So our art critic, Jerry Saltz, took a replica of Guernica underground, in the hopes of learning what New Yorkers make of it and helping them understand the work.

This Saturday, November 17th at 8:30pm, Saviello will be holding his first ever art show at Astor Place Haircutters where there will also be a public screening of the above short film. Check it out!

The exhibition, a joint project with the Musée du Louvre, illuminates Delacroix's restless imagination through more than 150 paintings, drawings, prints, and manuscripts—many never before seen in the United States. It unfolds chronologically, encompassing the rich variety of themes that preoccupied the artist during his more than four decades of activity, including literature, history, religion, animals, and nature. Through rarely seen graphic art displayed alongside such iconic paintings as Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi (1826), The Battle of Nancy (1831), Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834), and Medea about to Kill Her Children (1838), this exhibition explores an artist whose protean genius set the bar for virtually all other French painters.

When I was a kid my parents told me that I could grow up to be anything I wanted. I took that literally and decided I would become a bird so I could fly. When I got older I found out that I could not actually become a bird so I became an artist instead. This one goes out to all the veterans on this Veterans Day. “LAX / JFK” is being curated by the folks at @thinkspace_art. This is the first piece I’ve done with different animals. 🦏🦆🐼🐨 While I was painting I was thinking about how each animal captured the specific personality of the person. A fun little detail: all the animals are herbivores and yet the mother’s bag is alligator skin. A little twist to predator/prey dynamic. At 40 x 55 inches this is one of the largest oil paintings I’ve made to date." align="left" style="display:inline-block;padding:0.25em;" src="https://cdn.viewing.nyc/ul3set5spe1xhv65hkpirahx7xr9" />

Los Angeles-based artist Matthew Grabelsky has an interesting series of surreal portraits of people on the New York City subway that are normal from the neck down, but who have their heads replaced by a variety of wild animals.

Having grown up in New York and being fascinated by the imagery of Greek mythology as a kid, Grabelsky’s paintings are an exploration of human nature and of the way that animals represent various parts of the human subconscious. “The characters are symbolic of the kinds of thoughts that lie under the surface of people’s minds, and they reveal that the most extraordinary can exist in the most ordinary of everyday settings,” the artist told Prohbtd in an interview. “This theme is communicated through the juxtaposition of these ostensibly irrational images with otherwise completely mundane scenes. My idea is that my creatures are not original but are ultimately part of a much larger cultural continuum.”

Check out his portfolio and/or follow @grabelsky on Instagram for more.
