View The Metropolitan Opera Against the Manhattan Skyline Tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series is a special event on Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 in which the opera singers from the company perform on a stage setup on Harbor View Lawn against the views of the East River and Manhattan Skyline.

This year’s recital features rising Young Met stars soprano Susanna Phillips, who starred as Clémence in the Met premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin this past season, tenor Stephen Costello, who recently starred as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong, whose recent roles include Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Hermia in the Baroque pastiche The Enchanted Island, accompanied on piano by Dan Saunders.

The event is completely free of charge and is tonight, June 14th, from 7pm to 9pm.

[WATCH] I Live Here, The Times Square Midnight Moment for May 2017

Times Square's Midnight Moment is an art initiative by Times Square Arts in which all of the billboards in Times Square synchronize to show an audio/visual art piece at exactly 11:57pm everyday for 3 minutes.

This month's Midnight Moment is I Live Here from local director, animator and visual artist Joshua Frankel.

In the mid-20th century, urban theorist and activist Jane Jacobs took on Robert Moses, the Master Builder behind most of New York City’s bridges, highways, housing projects, parks, zoos and public swimming pools, in a battle over the fate of lower Manhattan and New York City as a whole – one that is still relevant today. Joshua Frankel brings that battle to visual life with animation, creating a collage of photographs and film footage, computer-generated imagery, libretto fragments, and blueprints for Moses’ proposed Lower Manhattan Expressway to illustrate the epic structures, millions of people, grassroots protest, and abstract urban theories involved in the conflict. Excerpted from the forthcoming multimedia opera A Marvelous Order, I LIVE HERE travels through the city, speeding by the buildings that would have been demolished by the Lower Manhattan Expressway, watching the infinite drips of air conditioners or the growth of shadows across a street, and unfurling change like rolls of sod across empty spaces. The result examines preservation, “progress,” and the very human conflict that grew out of themes that are right at home in Times Square.

The Opera Collective is a large group of NYC-based opera singers who seek to "make opera accessible to the general public by presenting engaging events of vocal music, including opera, art song, operetta and musical theater." In this short video from Great Big Story, see how the collective is taking New York City subway busking to a whole new level.

While New York City's subway riders are glued to their smartphones, a small group of singers is bringing light to the underground with opera. Opera Collective is a group of around 30 New York City opera singers who perform in a rather unusual venue: subway platforms. Every week, these talented sopranos, altos and tenors take their voices underground to awe thousands of subway riders.

Listen to This Amazing Opera Singer Belt It Out In a Crypt Under a Harlem Church

Lawrence Brownlee is one of the best opera singers in the world, recently nominated for "Male Singer of the Year" by the International Opera Awards.

In this video from NPR, watch as the accomplished singer belts out a powerful aria in the hidden crypt of Harlem's Church of the Intercession.

A crypt, they thought, would be an appropriate setting to perform their version of the song. So we took our cameras and microphones — and a lovely piano — deep into the active crypt below the historic Church of the Intercession in Harlem. The 1915 structure at 155th Street and Broadway is a New York City landmark and a dramatic setting for occasional concerts, including a December 2015 recital by Brownlee.

New York Metropolitan Opera Performs the Classic 'Meet the Mets' at Lincoln Center Plaza

The Metropolitan Opera doesn't usually do public shows, but when the Mets are in the World Series for the first time in 15 years, unusual events call for unusual performances.

Mr. Met conducts as members of the Metropolitan Opera and Chorus perform "Meet the Mets" on the Plaza at Lincoln Center in advance of game 1 of the World Series on October 27, 2015.
