New York in 1904 was a city on the verge of tremendous changes - and, not surprisingly, many of those changes had their genesis in the bustling energy and thronged streets of Times Square. Two innovations that would completely transform the Crossroads of the World debuted in 1904: the opening of the city's first subway line, and the first-ever celebration of New Year's Eve in Times Square.

The "1" and "6" New Years Eve Lights Arrive Early in Times Square

Landmark Signs & Electric brought the 7-foot-tall "1" and "6" New Years Eve lights out to Times Square a bit early for testing and to give tourists an opportunity to snap a photo with them.

The "1" and "6 that will soon make up the giant illuminated "2016" sign arrived on the back of a truck and were on display all day — popular with tourists eager to get a photo with the centerpiece of the world's biggest New Year's Eve celebration.

According to officials, the "2" and "0" should arrive in the next few days.
