The Building of a Community is a documentary produced by Colectivo Piloto and the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space about activist history and community in the Lower East Side.

With its long and continuing history as a haven for immigrants, artists, musicians, poets, and political activists, the Lower East Side has been a cultural incubator since its earliest days. Ideas, movements, trends and customs that derive from either old or new world cultures, or both, emerged and radiated from here.

The New York Police Department recently published an interesting self-promotional video titled The NYPD Is Keeping NYC Safe: A Look Back Through The Years in which they compare scenes of 1970's and 1980s New York City — "Old" New York — with their current day counterparts. There's no doubt that the City has gotten safer in the past 40 years, and that the NYPD has played an important role in making that happen.

We literally just shared a vintage film from the 80s about Lower East Side culture, and here is its modern counterpart.

The Building of a Community is a well-shot 2012 documentary produced by Colectivo Piloto and the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space about activist history and community in the Lower East Side.

With its long and continuing history as a haven for immigrants, artists, musicians, poets, and political activists, the Lower East Side has been a cultural incubator since its earliest days. Ideas, movements, trends and customs that derive from either old or new world cultures, or both, emerged and radiated from here.
