THE NEIGHBORS’ WINDOW (written & directed by four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Marshall Curry) tells the story of Alli (Maria Dizzia), a mother of young children who has grown frustrated with her daily routine and husband (Greg Keller). But her life is shaken up when two free-spirited twenty-somethings move in across the street and she discovers that she can see into their apartment.

Real-estate and rental website RentCafé recently crunched their numbers and found that the number of senior citizens who rent in New York City, and other lesser-than cities around the U.S., have drastically increased over the past 5 years.

The high flexibility, low responsibility lifestyle is now appealing not only to the ubiquitous Millennials, but also to Baby Boomers – this generational group is leaving homeownership in droves: between 2009 and 2015, the number of renters over 55 increased by 28 percent, compared to a 3 percent increase in renters 34 years or younger. This means 2.5 million senior renter households joined the renter cohort, compared to a mere half a million renters under 34.

New York has seen one of the most significant net increases in the number of senior renter households, second only to LA: approx. 125K new senior renters abandoned homeownership in favor of renting in this metro alone.

In the 1960s, many New Yorkers firmly believed that being trapped inside a windowless basement for days and even weeks with their neighbors may be potentially more harmful than being showered with nuclear fallout. That’s right—for many, toxic neighbors were considered an even greater threat than toxic fallout.

Tenant King is an interesting social media network which is completely private and exclusive to only your neighborhood. Once you sign up, you have to prove residency by entering a special code send to your building using good ol' snail mail.

Connecting with your neighbors and new people is an interesting idea, one that leads to a happier life, a concept that exists in nearly every other place in the nation yet is mostly nonexistent in the City.

Tenant King connects you with the people in your building and your neighborhood. It is a private network of neighbors designed to strengthen the communities within Lower Manhattan and Long Island City’s high-rises.

The new social network currently covers the following neighborhoods:

Battery Park City - Financial District - Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village - Seaport - Tribeca - Long Island City

Tenant King only recently expanded to Long Island City, and this video above tells the story of why LIC resident Amadeo Plaza chose to signup and how it helps him stay connected in his community.

Amadeo has lived in Long Island City for about a year. Even though he enjoys the community, he thinks New York City has a bad habit: even if people live on right top of each other, no one actually knows one another. He thinks Tenant King can be a powerful tool to break down the barriers we build around each other and ourselves. He started a potluck for young parents, and its success far exceeded his expectations: Meet Amadeo.

Tenant King plans to expand to all neighborhoods throughout the City. Apply if you already live in one of the covered neighborhoods, or signup for free to be notified when they open up for your area.
