The New York Landmarks Conservancy's Tourist in Your Own Town series explores some of New York City’s best hidden gems as well as some of the classic iconic landmarks. In this video from the series, we take a look at the Van Cortlandt House Museum, one of the oldest houses in New York City, and the oldest in The Bronx.

The Van Cortlandt House Museum is located inside Van Cortlandt Park at Broadway and West 246th Street in the Bronx. […] The large Georgian manor dates from 1748 and is the oldest house in the Bronx. It is built from local fieldstone with contrasting brick trim and was designated a City Landmark in 1966, with interiors added in 1975. It's also a National Historic Landmark.

The building became the City's first house museum in 1897 and it still continues today, under the auspices of the National Colonial Dames of New York State. Educational programs are offered with over 250 school groups visiting each year, and a summer camp program is offered in August.

See the place where George Washington, John Adams, Count Rochambeau of France, and King William IV of the U.K. visited.

Few cityscapes are more recognizable, or more beloved, than New York City. But something even many lifelong New Yorkers don’t know is that there is a full to-scale model of the entire city right in their own backyard. It is the largest and most detailed model of any city ever built, requiring over a hundred full-time workers and years of painstaking effort.

Not only is it accurate down to the last building and street corner, but it is also a time machine. The model was last updated in 1992, offering a precise window into the past. It is nostalgic for longtime residents, surprising in both its differences and its similarities to present day, and full of ghostly revelations about the city, and the world, that once was.

Tonight on Looking 4, we’ll shrink down to one twelve-hundredth of our normal size and take a walk through the streets of New York in the early 90s, uncovering the remarkable work behind the world’s largest architectural model and gaining a unique insight into what life for New Yorkers was like in 1992.

The Breuer was always a radical premise: architecture as proof that ideas matter. Its bold forms, coffered ceilings, and off-kilter windows challenged the city to see differently. Now, Sotheby’s returns to Madison Avenue to place the world’s most powerful engine of cultural value — collecting, selling, and shaping art — inside this uncompromising modernist icon.

Inside, the building comes alive again, calibrated for the 21st century without losing the genius of Marcel Breuer’s design. Galleries, auction spaces, and new cultural intersections coexist within its sculptural walls, proving that architecture can do more than house art: it can amplify it. What happens here next will ripple far beyond these walls.

In this video from the series, we take a look at Flushing's Voelker Orth Museum, a landmarked home built in 1891.

The Voelker Orth Museum in Flushing Queens is a picturesque frame house built in 1891. Inside, you will find the story of Conrad Voelker, a German immigrant, and his family whose furnishings and photos are on display.

The museum is also devoted to local history and nature. It offers exhibitions, house tours, performances, talks and workshops, and educational programs year-round. The property was designated a New York City Landmark in 2007, ensuring that this small corner of Flushing's history endures to be enjoyed by generations to come.

“It seems funny to say it, but long before there was an ‘art world,’ there was art in the world.” So begins the artist and writer Russell Connor’s meditative tour of public art in New York City. In this time of social distancing, virtually wander the streets and parks of early 1970s Manhattan, from Grand Army Plaza to Wall Street. Local artists feature alongside works by Pablo Picasso, Louise Nevelson, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden and more.

Join Stephanie Herdrich, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Painting & Drawing, Caroline Corbeau-Parsons, Curator of Drawings and Paintings, Musée D’Orsay, Paris, and Paul Perrin, Director of Conservation and Collections, Musée D’Orsay,Paris, to virtually explore Sargent and Paris.

Sargent and Paris explores the early career of American painter John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), from his arrival in Paris in 1874 as a precocious 18-year-old art student through the mid-1880s, when his infamous portrait Madame X was a scandalous success at the Paris Salon. Over the course of one extraordinary decade, Sargent achieved recognition by creating boldly ambitious portraits and figure paintings that pushed the boundaries of conventionality.

Immersed in a cosmopolitan circle of artists, writers, and patrons, Sargent was able to navigate a successful path through the French exhibition system while achieving acclaim and awards. Beyond the portrait studio, he traveled in search of inspiration for his art—finding subjects in Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and North Africa. This exhibition gathers Sargent’s diverse works from this period to illuminate his path to becoming an artist, which was indelibly shaped by his experiences in the French capital. These visually stunning works provide a compelling view of the Paris art world of the late 19th century.

The iconic Madame X, a beloved highlight of The Met collection, is the culmination of Sargent’s early years in Paris. The exhibition will take an in-depth look at this captivating portrait and the numerous preparatory sketches, and it will be displayed alongside select portraits of Parisiennes by Sargent’s contemporaries.
