Surrounded by New York City streets on all sides, you won't get completely lost in Central Park as you can simply walk in any direction to get out. But sitting at 843-acres large, navigating within the park can be tough, and if you are trying to get out to a specific exit or direction, can sometimes be challenging if you are unfamiliar with the surrounding buildings. Luckily, there is a secret code embedded on every lamppost within the park that can help you get around. Learn all about it in this great short video from YouTuber Alec Bostwick.

New York City is a city rich with immigrant population, and it has been this way for a very long time. In these vintage maps from 1894 recently relocated by Slate , you can see just how dense the immigrant population was in New York City, showing the distribution of the principal nationalities by sanitary districts.

These two maps don’t represent the total diversity in any given sanitation district. They only show the largest two or three groups that made up two-thirds of each district’s population. The decision ultimately dramatized the strong presence of foreign-born citizens from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Russia throughout Manhattan. Pierce told Harpers’ Weekly at the time that Scotch, English, Welsh, Scandinavian, and Canadian New Yorkers were not recorded due to “being in small numbers and perhaps less foreign than the others.”

The map of Brooklyn is kind of hard to wrap your head around. It's the second largest of New York City's five boroughs, making it three times bigger than Manhattan. Brooklyn is huge. Brooklyn is huge thanks to the grid pattern covering most of it. Manhattan is pretty easy to make sense of, but Brooklyn does not have that same luxury. The streets here are not regular. Brooklyn is basically what Manhattan would have been had there been no 1811 Commissioners Plan. As I started looking at Old maps of Brooklyn, I realized that there's actually a bigger story here and it's about the growth of New York City so I want to look at several features on this map that tell that story.
