The latest issue of The New Yorker features “April 15th, 2020,” a kaleidoscopic account of a single day in New York, which has become an epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. In it, dozens of the magazine’s writers and contributors capture snapshots of life—on the streets, on fire escapes and tugboats, and in hospitals, apartments, attics, and subways. The result is a fractal portrait of the city, and Chris Ware’s cover is a fitting complement.

Check out the accompanying article to hear what the artist has to say about this great New Yorker cover.

“It’s one of my favorite places to hang out,” Jorge Colombo says, about the park he sketched, on an iPad, for the cover of this week’s issue. “I live down the street, in Brooklyn Heights, so I go there all the time, either to take the East River Ferry or just to relax by the water. It is a magnet—people come from all of Brooklyn’s many neighborhoods just to take a selfie by the waterfront or picnic by the water."

If you looked up in Midtown last night, you probably saw the Empire State Building plastered in photographic projections covering the top 42 floors on the north side. It was all part of a celebration for the 150th anniversary of fashion magazine Harpers Bazaar. As cool as this was, let's hope the Empire State Building doesn't turn into another Times Square with frequent advertisements and projections.

Editor Françoise Mouly explains:

This year, as a response to the opening weeks of the Trump Administration, particularly the executive order on immigration, we feature John W. Tomac’s dark, unwelcoming image, “Liberty’s Flameout.” “It used to be that the Statue of Liberty, and her shining torch, was the vision that welcomed new immigrants. And, at the same time, it was the symbol of American values,” Tomac says. “Now it seems that we are turning off the light.”

When we first received the results of the election, we felt as though we had hit a brick wall, full force. “The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism,” David Remnick wrote in a piece posted shortly after the announcement. “The pathos—the disappointment at waking up on Wednesday morning and not finding a woman President-elect—is undeniable, and heartbreaking,” added Amy Davidson. Our Web site is now continually updated with reactions like these, to the news of Trump’s victory. “To combat authoritarianism, to call out lies, to struggle honorably and fiercely in the name of American ideals—that is what is left to do. That is all there is to do,” Remnick concluded. And so we must go on—with words and images such as this cover by Bob Staake for next week’s issue.
