Conceived by James Ramsey and Dan Barasch, The Lowline is a plan to use innovative solar technology to illuminate an abandoned trolley terminal on the Lower East Side of New York City. Their vision is a stunning underground park, providing a beautiful respite and a cultural attraction in one of the world’s most dense, exciting urban environments.

First Look at the Official Lowline Underground Park Proposal in Full

The Lowline is an urban enrichment program that plans to place a naturally lit underground park in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Originally based on the success of the The High Line, co-founders Dan Barasch and James Ramsey have been planning the park for several years, and have only recently been given the chance to submit their proposal on how to use the uncontested underground space.

The New York City Economic Development Corp. (EDC) this past summer conditionally approved a plan to turn an abandoned trolley station below Delancey Street into the world’s first underground park. Now, for the first time, we’re getting a look at the winning proposal to create the Lowline on the Lower East Side.

The Lowline Underground Park Clears First New York City Government Hurdle

The Lowline is an urban enrichment program that plans to place a naturally lit underground park in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

On Thursday, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen and NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer announced that the agency has selected the Lowline team to turn the abandoned former Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal into the world’s first underground park.
