New Yorkers throw out a lot of interesting things. Some things are food items that are perfectly edible, some are in discarded yet otherwise perfect condition, and sometimes, people even toss vintage items with a ton of history. In this short video from filmmakers Rota6 Films, meet a trash collector named Nick DiMola who finds, cleans, and keeps these historic items.

Meet Nick DiMola, a bonafide trash connoisseur. He loves his job and he loves garbage. Over 30 years in the garbage business, he has collected a museum’s worth of old and rare items, most of it from the estates of dead people. With every piece of trash that he saves from the landfill, a piece of history lives on.

Working behind the scenes to keep the operation running smoothly, the dishwasher is arguably one of the most important people at a restaurant. At Gage & Tollner, one of the oldest restaurants in Brooklyn, the job falls to Drevon Alston. A former subway performer, Drevon, who goes by Dre, puts in long hours not only washing dishes but also shuttling them across multiple floors to different parts of the kitchen.

“On the Job With Priya Krishna” is a series about labor and the people who shape what we eat and how we eat, and whose jobs often go unseen. On this episode, Priya follows Dre as he hustles through his workday.
