Anyone with an Instagram account and an interest in contemporary art understands the reasoning behind Cattelan’s suggestion:“America”—the first piece the artist has exhibited since his 2011 retrospective at the Guggenheim—is a working toilet cast from gold that has been installed in a bathroom on the museum’s fourth floor. Cattelan intends visitors to use the toilet just as they would any other facility in the building.

In Times Square until September 5th, the installation is proving very popular with both tourists and locals alike.

Times Square Arts and artist Aman Mojadidi bring Once Upon A Place, an interactive public art installation that creates a platform for immigrant voices, to Duffy Square (46th Street and 7th Avenue) from June 27- September 5. Visitors will be invited to open the door of one of three repurposed telephone booths, pick up the receiver, and listen to oral histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. Visitors can also open the phone book inside each booth to read more about the storytellers' communities both here in New York and the countries they have traveled from, and to leave behind a part of their own story if they wish. The installation includes 70 different stories that will last anywhere between 2 and 15 minutes.

While you can't escape the December cold, you might just be able to escape some of that holiday stress. Head to the Flatiron Plaza to try out a new form of public therapy: hammocks!

In response to the plaza's annual design competition, a team from LOT architecture recently installed majestic LED-lighted arches known as "The Flatiron Sky-Line" that hold six cozy hammocks, which are free and open for exploration by everyone in the neighborhood. From 9:00am to 9:00pm, New Yorkers can nestle in for a new perspective of their daily surroundings, including the Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park, and yes, even the winter sky.

Go ahead and take a load off - if you find a way to drown out the sirens, the honking, and the barking surrounding the plaza, it's almost like a beach vacation. Almost.

Read more about the temporary installation in the full article from Gothamist, and go for a swing before they disappear after the holidays.

In honor of the DUMBO Improvement District's 10th anniversary, the goal of this piece is to celebrate and connect this vibrant Brooklyn community. When probed, the Reflector can depict the local weather and traffic forecast, respond to Magic 8-Ball Style questions, and even react to various neighborhood hashtags with abstract patterns of color and light.

I designed the DUMBO Reflector to literally reflect the culture of DUMBO back onto itself,” said multimedia artist David Crumley. “At its core, community is the people and scenes that inhabit a place, and the digital interactive features of the sign provide a commentary on how we interact in our communities today, how dialogue takes place, and the need for physical space and art to bring us together.

- David Crumley

The sign is scheduled to travel around the neighborhood throughout the upcoming months - go meet the DUMBO Reflector at the John Street section of the park while you can.

Installed the Herald Square Subway Station in 1995, the art looks like part of the station infrastructure and goes by unnoticed by many.

As waiting pedestrians reach up and wave their hands in front of one of the eight “eyes,” a beam of light is interrupted. This activates REACH, which emits a range of sounds—from melodic instruments (marimba, flute) to environmental “sound images” (Everglades, rain forest). The piece is installed on both the uptown and downtown platforms of the 34th Street N/R subway station in New York City. Riders often play REACH with other passengers across the tracks.

Commuters still interact with Reach even on today's phone-filled subway platform.

Related Companies, the development firm behind the Hudson Yards mega-construction project in Hell's Kitchen, recently revealed a 16-story interactive sculpture titled "Vessel" featuring a labyrinth of interconnected staircases.

More than three years after he boasted that the centerpiece of Hudson Yards’ public plaza would be New York’s Eiffel Tower, Related Companies chairman Stephen Ross has unveiled the design for a 16-story web of interconnected staircases that will rise among the mega-projects glass-and-steel towers. The structure, titled “Vessel” and designed by Thomas Heatherwick, comes with a price tag of $150 million and will be in place at the Far West Side campus’ public square in two years.

I don't know about "New York's Eiffel Tower", but the interactive sculpture does look pretty interesting. What do you think?
