American literature is big. It’s not easy to find your way around. So, Crossword-Solver used Goodreads data to build a new interactive tool for the armchair traveler: enter your zip code, and we’ll reveal the book set closest to you. Further down, we use the stats to discover the literary nature of each state and the towns where you’re most likely to find yourself in a book.

Key Findings
- New York City is the most common literary setting in the U.S., appearing prominently in 2,609 books.
- New York is also the most-seen state in literature, although California is number one if you discount both states’ top locations.
- Every novel set in Pearl Harbor is listed as ‘historical’ on Goodreads.
- 92.59% of all books set in Bloomington, Indiana, belong to the romance genre.

[INFOGRAPHIC] New York City is Home to the 2nd Oldest Business in the United States

The man with his face on your $10 bill founded The Bank of New York in 1784. Alexander Hamilton would go on to become America’s first Secretary of the Treasury and the subject of a multi-Tony Award-winning musical. But after the War of Independence, Hamilton’s priority was to stimulate the young country’s economic growth.

Hamilton attributed his many successes to hard work rather than ‘genius.’ But the Bank of New York’s longevity is partly due to his astute creation of what was only the third bank in the United States (Hamilton was also a founding shareholder in the first bank, the Bank of North America). Merging with Mellon Financial Corporation in 2007 is said to have saved the company $700m in costs. It also added Mellon’s wealth-management business to the pot.

A recent study done by website Travel Math collected bacteria samples from some major transit networks in the U.S. and found the New York City is the dirties of them all.

We sent a team to gather bacteria samples from the handles on public transit systems in five major cities: New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco. Overall, surprisingly few germs lurked on these surfaces, with one major exception: the subway in New York City. No one likes to be embarrassed by not giving a generous enough tip, but there are also times when some people aren't sure whether or not a tip is expected for a service. A simple thing to remember about tipping when visiting New York City, though, is that you should always tip your service workers.

For New Yorkers who work in the service industry, including hotels, restaurants, and drivers, tips are an essential part of their earnings. New York City real-estate search website StreetEasy recently created this informative graphic showing the fifteen tallest buildings in NEw York City, and their locations. With the exception of the under-construction 9 Dekalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, all other buildings are in the Manhattan in the neighborhoods of Hudson Yards, Central Park South, Midtown, and the Financial District.

New York City, with its bravado and competitive thirst, is home to many of the tallest buildings in the country. While there are certainly practical reasons for why our buildings keep growing — a more populous city demands higher-density housing and office space, for example — maybe we also just like seeing big things get bigger?
