A few weeks ago, we wrote about how the popular website Humans of New York helped a Brownsville middle school raise over a million dollars for school trips to Harvard and other college campuses. Now that the world has heard all about it, The Atlantic decided to go in and find out what make a school principal so special, and why they matter in the lives of children.

The Atlantic’s video team spent a day at Mott Hall to learn how Lopez responded to the attention, and more important, to understand why she is such a successful principal. As Lopez explains it, her hands-on approach is a big reason why Mott Hall has become such a safe haven in Brownsville. “In this building, my kids are going to feel like they’re successful,” she said.

See the accompanying article on The Atlantic for more information about Principal Lopez or about Mott Hall Bridges Academy.

Yesterday, we introduced Brandon Stanton, the human behind the immensely popular Humans of New York photo blog. Recently Brandon posted a photo and story of Vidal, a teenage student in a Brownsville, Brooklyn, as well as profiles of several people in the schools administration, including Mrs. Lopez, the principal.

A few days later, this post went up on the Facebook page asking for help fundraising to send Brownsville student for a visit to see Ivy League schools including Harvard. The school set a relatively modest goal of $100,000, enough to send the kids on the trip for the next 3 school years. Since January 22nd, the IndieGogo campaign has brought in am impressive amount, just under $1,000,000 at the time of this writing.

BBC Trending interviewed Vidal and Mrs. Lopex about the campaign's wild success.
