For many, New York City is a place of dreams. But John Torres knows it's darker sides. He and his family live in one of the city's homeless shelters.

For more than a year John Torres and his wife Zoe have been looking for an apartment, without any luck. A daughter being added to the equation hasn't made things any easier. John has a part-time job, but it doesn’t pay enough for them to make ends meet. The challenge he faces is one affecting many. As of January 2023, around 650,000 Americans are in a similar position - the highest number of homeless people in the USA ever, with more than 90,000 in New York alone. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many aid programs have been discontinued and the cost of housing has risen so dramatically, that in some cases residents can no longer afford the rent and end up on the streets. Many of the organizations offering aid are privately funded, like the one helping John Torres. But finding affordable housing is difficult. A report by Benjamin Alvarez Gruber.

Stories of "mole people" have always intrigued me. Years ago I went urban exploring in search of these mole people living in the tunnels under New York City. I found some of them in the Freedom Tunnel, a train tunnel that runs under the West Side highway.

This tunnel is well known for its graffiti, but is also the home to several homeless people. Two of these men were nice enough to invite me into their homes in the train tunnel.

This video is a short interview with Walter, a homeless man who has lived in the Freedom Tunnel for over 20 years. The level of comfort and amenities he has made for himself in the train tunnel is astonishing. It is a paradox that a so called "homeless person" has made such a nice home for himself.

He had electricity, a computer, a stereo, and many other modern comforts underground. Walter talks about his life in the tunnel, and some of what it takes to survive living below the streets of New York.

Sadly Walter passed away in 2012 when he was struck by a train.

The authorities cleared everyone out of the tunnel a few years later, and cleaned up the entire area. The police now make routine sweeps through the tunnel.

According to Feeding America, there are 42 million people facing hunger in the United States, with 1.4 million being in New York City alone. Astonishingly, research shows about 40% of the food produced in America today goes to waste; this is equivalent to 70 billion tons. Our goal is make sure the wholesome excess food gets to hungry mouths.

In New York City, Girl Scout Troop 6000 is a very unique troop that is comprised of only homeless children living in the City's shelter system. Started by a former shelter resident Giselle Burgess, the troop provides the children with a stable group and community amongst the chaos of the shelters. Learn more in this touching video from Great Big Story.

They sell cookies, earn badges and, on their honor, try to help people at all times. But there’s something that makes their sisterhood even more special. Meet Girl Scout Troop 6000: the first of its kind for girls living in the New York City shelter system. Founder Giselle Burgess knows how important community and stability are for those facing homelessness … because she’s been there herself.
