The Flatiron Building, originally called the Fuller Building, is so symbolic of New York City that it is tough to imagine a time when it wasn't there. But the building for which an entire neighborhood was named didn't go up on the corner of 23rd and Broadway until 1902. This vintage photograph circa 1900 shows the smaller two and three story buildings that once existed in the intersection.

This view of 23rd Street at the intersection of Fifth Ave and Broadway was taken around 1900. The ornate street lamp and multitude of signs and advertising make this a great street level photograph. [...] The famous Fuller Building, better known as the Flatiron went up in 1902 on the site of this triangular plot which had a series of two and three story buildings located on it throughout the late 1800’s.

Created in the 1920s, this incredible vintage film gives a tour of New York City buildings, streets, neighborhoods, hotspots, and attractions all throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. As a silent film, there are written descriptions of what you are seeing every few seconds. The film was found and uploaded to YouTube by Dutch historian, photographer, and videographer Michael Rogge. Well worth the 8-minute watch, check it out!

DESPITE standing just 22-storeys tall on an island full of massive skyscrapers, New York's Flatiron Building managed to endure as a cake-slice shaped icon of this city since 1902. That unusual triangular shape has captured the eyes of photographers, tourists and directors for decades.

But in recent years, this world-famous structure has sat empty and under scaffolding only for a New York court to then order it be put up for grabs at auction in early 2023 – an auction that seems to have turned into a bit of a farce. It’s the latest uncertain chapter in the long story of this building – a building that’s seen so much of New York’s history unfold and endured so much already.

This is how one of the city’s strangest towers came to be, how it went on to become iconic and why the current struggles around its sale will probably only make it more famous.

New York’s Flatiron Building (originally named the Fuller Building) has been considered an iconic landmark since its completion in 1902. Serving as anchor to what is now called “the Flatiron District”, this triangular 22-story steel-framed tower has attracted countless tourists and filmmakers as well as encourage business and leisure at its site on the intersections of Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and 23rd Street.
