On April 24, 1943 a fire started in the engine room of the Panamanian freighter SS El Estero. Fire can always represent a danger to a ship, but this fire offered particular concern. The El Estro was carrying more than thirteen hundred tons of high explosives, and was in New York Harbor.

[WATCH] PSA: Fireworks in New York City Can Lead to Serious Fires or Death

Fireworks are dangerous and are illegal in New York City. In June and July of 2020, 30 New Yorkers suffered serious burns or lost fingers from using illegal fireworks.

Fireworks in New York City lead to serious fires that destroy homes, like the photos shown here from the Bronx on June 23, and this video from Brooklyn on June 24, when fireworks that were ignited in a driveway entered an open window on the first floor of the home. The occupants - unaware that a fire had started - continued to set off fireworks, even entering the home at one point to retrieve more as the fire spread. The entire home was destroyed.

[VIDEO] This Times Square Billboard is On Fire. Literally.

Well, it was on Saturday at least. Pix 11 reports:

An electronic billboard was on fire in Times Square Saturday afternoon, according to fire officials and multiple videos posted on Twitter by users in the area. The fire, which started around 3 p.m. Saturday, was under control by 6 p.m., the FDNY said. The sign covers about four floors of the building at 3 Times Square, also known as the Thomson Reuters building. Flames did not spread beyond the sign, authorities said. The sign was "de-energized" after 80 firefighters responded to the building, the spokesperson said. It's unclear what caused the fire.

This unbelievable vintage photograph from the Museum of the City of New York's digital collection shows the aftermath of the Equitable Life Assurance Fire which tore through the Financial District building at 120 Broadway on January 9th, 1912. In this capture, taken on January 12th, you can see the New York Fire Department using steam to melt away the ice adhered to the building after the fire fighting efforts.

Here is the famous WPIX Christmas Day Yule Log video in a long loop for your enjoyment. Relax with the sounds of a crackling fireplace, or check out the video below for a version with Christmas music instead.

The Yule Log was created in 1966 by Fred M. Thrower, President and CEO of WPIX, Inc. Inspired by an animated Coca-Cola commercial a year earlier that showed Santa Claus at a fireplace, he envisioned this television program as a televised Christmas gift to those residents of "The Big Apple" who lived in apartments and homes without fireplaces. This also provided time for employees of the TV station to stay home with their families, instead of working for the usual morning news program.

Official Drone Video Shows FDNY Fighting 4-Alarm Fire in Brooklyn From Above

This official drone video released by the New York City Fire Department shows them battling a 4-alarm fire from above. The fire broke out yesterday morning in Bedford Stuyvesant from unknown causes. One fire-fighter had a non-life-threatening injury, and no one else was hurt in the blaze.
