In this time-lapse film, I worked to photograph the look and feel of a time long gone — blend the old style of New York with the more modern changes that have become interwoven with the city's true essence. Join me as we go back in time to the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s to a grittier and glamorous New York that can only be captured in black-and-white.

Every New Yorker is familiar with Showtime dancers cheering up a full subway car - though these days dancers get arrested instead of earning tips for their talents. Dancers are being forced out of the subway and now have alternative events like “Its Showtime NYC” to legally dance above ground. This was the original inspiration for EROSION - a changing city, that is losing culture and character while it gets cleaned up. Moving towards a landscape of sterile glass high rises. It is a a safe, clean, boring new world!

Inspired by MoMA’s summer-long film series "Horror: Messaging the Monstrous," we spoke with scholars Ashlee Blackwell, Kali Simmons, and series co-organizer Caryn Coleman about their formative horror movie moments, moving beyond the slasher film, the “final girl,” and the genre’s long-overdue journey toward inclusion both on screen and behind the camera. Caryn Coleman is a film curator and found of The Future of Film is Female. Kali Simmons is an assistant professor of Indigenous Nations Studies at Portland State University. Ashlee Blackwell is a writer and producer, known for Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019).

In 2016, French filmmakers Claire & Max created this unique short film which imagines the entirety of New York City as a gigantic film set made up of fake building facades and props.

New York City. A switch noise and day appears instantly. This New-York is different: it’s a huge movie set with only facades without depth. Here, all people have a strange characteristic: a confusing and mesmerizing one… But what are we really?

Check out Claire & Max's technical writeup on how they achieved the look and feel of this film.

NY Cat Film Festival™ is made up of two different programs that are a mix of short films that honor the mysterious felines who have enchanted us for centuries. Cats have their own unique and indescribable bond with people – even when living independently as community cats. This festival celebrates our relationships with kitty cats, while giving back to animal welfare groups that protect cats and elevate their status.
