Brooklyn Farmer explores the unique challenges facing Brooklyn Grange, a group of urban farmers who endeavor to run a commercially viable farm within the landscape of New York City. As their growing operation expands to a second roof, the team confronts the realities inherent in operating the world’s largest rooftop farm in one of the world’s biggest cities.

After falling in love with the flavor of yuzu, Vivek and Seema decided to grow their own in New Jersey. Now, with help from their daughter Simran, the family has a full-on yuzu and citrus farm. While many of their rare fruits are available year-round, yuzu is only available August through November. Today, their business, Bhumi Growers, is one of the preferred yuzu and rare citrus vendors for top NYC restaurants like Masa and Gabriel Kreuther, and Elements in New Jersey.

Agriculture played a significant and valuable part in Staten Island’s financial growth, from Native Americans who farmed the land, to the expansion of the Island farms by the Huguenots and the English.Farm life was a never-ending struggle with nature, taming the landscape to make fields into farms by cutting forests and clearing and draining the swamps to create a pasture for domesticated animals. Horses were popular and used for the plowing and carrier of produce. Many farms included fruit orchards of various types such as apples, pears, peaches, and figs. Manhattan was the principal market for the 18th and 19th-century farmers of Richmond County, according to Staten Island Advance archives. (Compiled by Jan Somma-Hammel)

Dyckman Farm in Inwood is Manhattan's Only Remaining 18th Century Farmhouse

Up on the northern tip Manhattan, the Dyckman Farmhouse in Inwood is the oldest remaining original farmhouse in the Borough. Dating back to 1785, the house originally sat on 250 acres of surrounding farmland, but has since been reduced to just .5 acres, with a concrete City surrounding it completely.
