Worksman Cycles in Ozone Park is the oldest bike making factory in America, dating back over a century to 1898.

Taking up a whole city block in Ozone Park, Queens, is the oldest bike manufacturer in the country, Worksman Cycles. It has been in New York since 1898. The company prides itself on being the last of the large bike manufacturers with bikes still made in the United States. That’s an accomplishment in an era when U.S. manufacturing has declined. In 2014, 99 percent of the bicycles sold in the country were imported from China and Taiwan.

[VIDEO] This Rockaway Beach Chocolate Factory Survived Hurricane Sandy and Keeps on Ticking

The Madelaine Chocolate Company has been in its current Rockaway, Queens factory since 1967. When the entire factory was destroyed due to flooding after Hurricane Sandy, the company had to start over from scratch. But, they survived and are now one of the largest manufacturing factories in New York City. Check out this short video from New York Magazine to learn more about how the company made it through tough times.

It hasn’t always been easygoing for the Farber family since the Madelaine Chocolate Factory opened in 1949. In 2012, in fact, their waterfront factory in the Rockaway Beach area of Queens was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. The storm caused $50 million worth of damage to machinery and equipment, and Jorge Farber, who took over the factory after his father died, was forced to make some tough decisions. Today, the company has rebuilt and remains a pillar of the community.

Leon Eastmond is the 91-year-old owner of Easco Boiler Corporation, a boiler and manufacturing company in Hunts Point, Bronx. Despite his old age, Eastmond still heads into work every day, and has no plans for retirement. Learn more about him and his company in this short profile video from our friends at NY1.

Leon Eastmond has been working since he was 12 years old. At age 91, he has no plans to step away from the multi-million dollar manufacturing company that he built in the Bronx. "You know why so many people are anxious to retire? They don't like what they do," Arlington Leon Eastmond said. What Eastmond does is make boilers. His company EASCO is one of the largest black-owned boiler manufacturing companies in the country. He built it out of the welding and repair business that his father started in 1926.
