Mark Your Calendars! Dominican Day Parade Marches into Manhattan August 14

The Dominican Day Parade is coming this August 14th. Grand Marshaled by singer, song writer, and producer Juan Luis Guerra, this year's parade celebrates the accomplishments of Dominican women.

The goal is to honor and empower Dominican women, and raise awareness for future generations of strong, innovative women. The DDP will be announcing in the following weeks their roster of approximately 20 Dominican women being recognized at this year’s parade, along with other celebrities joining the festivities.

The deadline to register or participate in the parade is July 15th. Check out the parade page for more info.

First Ever Black-Owned Restaurant Month Hits the City in September

I DON'T DO CLUBS is an event blog started by Genese Jamilah out of the City that writes for young urban professionals who are looking for social events beyond the typical nightclub scene.

Earlier this summer, Jamilah began a series of articles that highlights Black-owned businesses around the country, and now she is taking it to the next level.

Building on this momentum, Genese decided to curate Black-Owned Restaurant Months (#IDDCBORM) starting in New York City in September 2015. Since 1992, the original Restaurant Week has introduced millions of foodies to new and exciting eateries and become an international institution. Why not bring this same movement to the Black community?

The Story of Samuel Battle, the NYPD's First African American Cop

The Leonard Lopate Show is a radio program on WNYC that gives "insight into contemporary art, theater, and literature, plus expert tips about the ever-important lunchtime topic: food."

In this 17-minute segment from the show, we are introduced to Samuel Battle, the first black police officer in the City.

When Samuel Battle broke the color line as New York City’s first African American cop in the 1920s, he had to deal with racist colleagues, death threats, and government corruption, along with criminals and gang members.

Battle's story is told in full in a new book: One Righteous Man: Samuel Battle and the Shattering of the Color Line in New York available in in both digital and hardback versions.
