South African street artist Faith XLVII (Faith47) recently finished a massive mural on the side of Olympia House at 279 E. 44th Street in Midtown East. Here is what the artist said about the piece, titled Equalitas:

Organized by @streetartformankind

An ode to one of the ILO’s global goals of Woman Economic Empowerment.

There has been great progress in the push for gender equality in the workplace, and we need to acknowledge and be grateful to those who have fought in the last century for woman’s rights, who in the 1920's stood firmly to bring us the right to vote and in the 1960’s introduced progressive legislations paving the way for us to be able to live independently and as equals to our fellow men.

However we understand that the process of empowerment is a something that happens over time and that there is much still much work to be done.

The statistics show that in many communities woman still face discrimination and lack the access to education and to employment that they should have.

Humanity, and the planet earth, with its animals and plants and organisms, face a critical time as it urgently calls for sustainable options moving forward. As we witness the rise of increasing polarization in society we believe that the empowerment of women will bring about solutions to some of these issues.

The balance the of masculine and feminine perspective is a necessary part of the healing process of the planet.
Not only in the role of gender, but in the psyche of each one of us.

It is a vital time for the female perspective to be heard.

This is about the Voice, the mind, the heart and developing intuition and valuing empathy. Owning the right to making decisions about our own bodies. About nurturing nature. And respecting the dignity of others.

We want to see more women in decision making positions, We want to see more representation of woman, specifically women of color in government. We congratulate Rwanda in its achievement of 61% women in congress, followed by Cuba and Bolivia, Today America sits a lowly 21% women in congress.

It is time to demand that our workplaces and institutions become more gender responsive and work in solidarity to assist in the creation of more inclusive societies.

Is America still the land of opportunity? If you work hard can you really get ahead? NYC’s rising cost of living, income stagnation, and student debt (among other factors) have converged to create a tale of two cities. A tale that has given birth to different sets of challenges for NYC’s low income, working class and middle income populations. What does economic inequality in NYC look like for you?

Brooklyn's income inequality gap is only getting wider. Tell your story and hear others at BRIC's Town Hall event in Downtown Brooklyn this February 27th.
Inequality and New York's Subway is an interactive project from The New Yorker that plots out the median income levels, using U.S. Census Bureau data, of the areas surrounding each subway stop, along a line of the subway itself. The resulting graph shows how the income levels change as you progress through the stops on any subway line. While the accompanying article is from 2013, and the City's income inequality has exacerbated in the years since, it is still a pretty accurate representation of the income inequality across the subway lines.

New York City has a problem with income inequality. And it’s getting worse—the top of the spectrum is gaining and the bottom is losing. Along individual subway lines, earnings range from poverty to considerable wealth. The interactive infographic here charts these shifts, using data on median household income, from the U.S. Census Bureau, for census tracts with subway stations.

For Women's History Month 2018 this March, food-delivery service GrubHub created a special website called RestaurantHER that highlights all restaurants that are owned, co-owned, or partnered with women. If you order from these restaurants on the site, GrubHub will donate $1 to the Women Chefs & Restaurateurs organization to help work towards equality on the restaurant industry. Currently only 19% of chefs are women, and it's time for that to change.

Pledge to dine in or order from a woman-led restaurant this March. Grubhub will contribute $1 up to $1 million for every pledge to dine in or order from women-led restaurants. The first $100,000 will be contributed to the Women Chefs & Restaurateurs organization to advance women in the culinary industry.

Check out RestaurantHER to support woman-owned restaurants in your neighborhood and borough.
