It sounds ridiculous, but it's true. At the Cooper Union Foundation Building in New York, there's the world's first elevator shaft: constructed four years before the safety elevator was invented. Thanks to Prof. O'Donnell and all the team at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

The 34th Street-Hudson Yards 7 station is the third deepest station in the New York City subway system. Because of the placement of the tracks deep underground, and the location of the entrance lobby, the elevators inside had to be built on a diagonal slant.

Vimeo uploader Pedro H. recently filmed a ride inside on of these diagonal elevators so we could get a peek at what it's like to ride inside.

The elevators at this station are unusual in that they don't go vertically. they go diagonally, like a funicular. It's pretty cool. I was on one of those funiculars in Quebec City.

Subway enthusiast Matthew Ahn made this map a few month back which shows just how tough it can be for people in wheelchairs to get around via the subway.

The map only shows stations which are wheelchair accessible, and there aren't a ton of them.

While there are 490 stations in the New York system (including Staten Island), barely more than 100 stations are accessible

Read through the full article for an interesting analysis on the accessibility of our subway.

One of the oldest elevators in the City resides in a co-op at 210 Riverside Drive in the Upper West Side. It is a manual elevator, where the doorman must control the elevator using a lever to go up and down, and the floor doors open by hand. This particular elevator is special not only for being vintage and one of the last remaining manual ones in the City , but also for being the filming location
for the scene in 1998's You've Got Mail where Tom Hanks gets stuck inside.

This short video, created by Ken Christensen for Crain's, interviews one of the co-op's board members about the simple financial decision behind deciding to upgrade the manual elevator rather than replace it with a newer, automated one.
