New York Police Department Unveils New Fleet of 14 Search and Rescue Drones

The NYPD has a new fleet of 14 drones. The department said on Tuesday that the potential uses include search and rescue, hard-to-reach crime scenes, hostage situations and hazardous material incidents. Officials say the drones can reduce risk to officers and bystanders during a response to dangerous situations and will be operated by officers who are specially trained and licensed.

Peek Inside the Carcass of the Old Kosciuszko Bridge in This POV Drone Video

Earlier this month, the old Kosciuszko Bridge was demolished using a series of controlled explosive charges, bringing the bridge down in a matter of seconds. While the crumbled bridge awaits full dismantling and removal, some local POV drone operators are exploring the carcass, creating this great video in the process.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has a fascinating new exhibit the just opened yesterday titled Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?. Peek inside the new exhibit in this comprehensive video from Ars Technica.

Ars Technica's Valentina Palladino attends the "Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?" exhibit at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. She talks to co-curator Dr. Missy Cummings about her roles in designing the exhibit, her experience as an educator and a US Navy fighter pilot.

The Drones: Is the Sky the Limit? exhibit runs until December 3rd, 2017 during normal museum operating hours. Check out the video's accompanying article for more details.

Welcome to the Age of Robotic Graffiti in NYC

Late last night, street artist KATSU flew a specially modified Phantom Quadcopter 50 feet in the air over a giant Calvin Klein billboard on Houston and sprayed a few red lines on the top of Kendall Jenner's oversized face.

In April last year, KATSU made headlines when he demonstrated that he had figured out how to attach a spray can to an off-the-shelf DJI Phantom drone. At the time, he was only using the drone to paint canvasses for white-wall galleries. But he assured the world that soon he would take his mad invention out into the streets and create enormous tags in places that were previously inaccessible to even the most daring and acrobatic taggers. Now, he appears to have made good on his promise in grand fashion.

It's not the Mona Lisa and the red lines probably won't last long, but it's an important first step down the road of robotic graffiti.

Given this, it's not too hard to imagine drone armies painting massive murals in the not-to-distant future.

Drone-Shot Video Gives Breathtaking Views of the Architecture Surrounding Chelsea's High Line

New York City based aerial filmmaker Will Chatham, along with video editor Joseph William Dluzak, created this great drone-shot video of the modern buildings which have sprung up around the High Line since it's opening. These buildings are amazing to look at from ground level, but full appreciation of their architecture is tough when viewing from only one angle. This video offers angles of view on these modern marvels that you can't get elsewhere.

The Upper West Side's Joe DiMaggio Highway is the named portion of the elevated section on the
West Highway between 54th St and 72nd St. It was named after the great New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio in 1999, just after his passing. YouTube channel Higher Productions recently uploaded this great little drone-shot aerial video of the highway and surrounding portions of the Hudson River Park.

drone flies farther and farther away from Benedetto, the bridge and City come into frame fully and beautifully. With professional level drones getting more affordable everyday, expect amazing selfie videos like this with increasing frequency.
