Dancers at the New York City Ballet go through about 7,000 pairs of pointe shoes each year. That's because traditional pointe shoes break down after only a few wears. All of them come from Freed of London, which has been one of the world's leading ballet-shoe manufacturers for nearly 80 years. We went behind the scenes with the New York City Ballet and Freed of London to see how pointe shoes became such a big business.

CU Generation and its “collab set” are everywhere! On campus walks, in our libraries, on rooftops, and in the streets of New York City. Here, CU Generation presents its “collab set” project, which is choreographed by team members and performed virtually.

CU Generation is an urban collegiate dance team at Columbia University that seeks to promote the urban dance community and provide a shared, inclusive space for its members to grow and support one another at Columbia. Though it has its roots in Asian culture, CU Generation has grown during the last decade to encompass a wide range of choreography and music.

The music featured in the video is Lights Out by Sonn Feat. Ayelle and Wonder by Shawn Mendes.

[VIDEO] The Freedom to Be: Alvin Ailey Dancers

In our third episode of The Freedom to Be video series, timed to coincide with #NationalDanceDay today (Sept. 18), we spotlight the Black dance community in NYC. Choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey founded his namesake company in 1958 to bring African American dance to all corners of the US—and, eventually, the world. The dance theater, which forged a space for Black creatives in times and places where it often didn’t exist, is now a fixture of New York City culture.

Meet two dancers from the troupe, Yannick Lebrun and Caroline Dartey, who emigrated from French Guiana and Switzerland, respectively, to pursue their dreams. Lebrun has been with the company for almost 15 years, while Dartey is just starting her journey. Both enjoy the sense of community and freedom of expression they’ve found at Alvin Ailey.
