Every January 1st for the past 114 years, a small group of brave people have taken a frigid swim in the Atlantic as part of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club Plunge. Not only did they want to jump into the 37° waters on a day with temperatures lower than 20°, they also paid to do so! With proceeds going to charity, of course.

This year, we are raising funds to support the Coney Island community including the New York Aquarium, Alliance for Coney Island and other local arts and history organizations. Coney Island is a neighborhood of 50,000 with a poverty rate close to 30% and is situated right on the Atlantic Ocean.

In this short video from the Staten Island Advance, see how this year's plunge turned out.

[…] Throughout the week, daytime temperatures will generally reach into the teens to mid-20s, while lows will drop into the single digits and teens. Single digit wind chills are expected during the overnight hours through the weekend.

Japanese clothing company Uniqlo is brilliantly capitalizing on this by setting up fancy vending machines in local airport arrival terminals that sell down jackets to cold travelers.
The Polar Bear Club is an annual winter swim event where members and guests swim every winter Sunday in the cold Atlantic waters off of Coney Island. The largest swim they organize is the New Years Day Coney Island Plunge, in which non-members are invited to take a dip in the frigid waters.

January 1st 2017 was unseasonally warm in New York City, bringing larger crowds out for a brisk jump in the ocean. Check it out in this video from the New York Daily News.

Hundreds of New Yorkers braved the cold and dove into the water at Coney Island for the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day.
