New York City’s Jing Fong restaurant closed its 800-seat dining room in Manhattan’s Chinatown on March 7, 2021, due to struggles during the Covid-19 pandemic. For almost 30 years, the landmark location served as a community space where elderly patrons spent mornings enjoying dim sum and locals of all ages celebrated special occasions such as wedding banquets and birthday parties.

Truman Lam, the third-generation owner of Jing Fong, said he could no longer afford to rent the dining hall space. About 100 workers are losing jobs because of the closure, but the restaurant will continue to handle takeaway and delivery orders. Lam said he is looking for a new space in Chinatown as a way of “keeping the business alive and providing as many jobs as we can.”

There was a Runyonesque feel to the last day at Tad’s Steakhouse in Times Square. Guys and Dolls, the musical, was based on Damon Runyon's characters from twenties and thirties.

Tad’s broiled their first meals here in NYC in 1955 where a guy could buy a doll a steak for a buck. Riese Restaurants who owned the limping chain, decided to stop operating in the city. There is one Tad's left in San Francisco.

But last Sunday night, dreamers, lovers, and out-of-towners in fur waited in line for one final nicely nicely priced steak. It was no longer a buck, but way less than a bushel and a peck (about $10 dollars).

Closed in 2016, Community Bookstore was a small privately owned bookshop that opened on the corner of Court and Warren in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, over 30 years prior by owner John Scioli. What makes the bookstore well-known is not its age though, it's the clutter.

Over the years, the store has grown into a medley of stacked books, scattered toys, vintage records, and cultural debris, all of it floating in an apparent chaos intelligible only to the store’s enigmatic owner. The store has no traditional storefront or open hours, the gray windows haven’t been washed for years, and no signage indicates that the store is still open for business.

Check out the full article from 2016 in the New Yorker for more on Community Bookstore and its unfortunate closing.
