Doing laundry in New York is a hellish experience, ask any New Yorker. Celsious, an eco-friendly laundromat in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, wanted to change that.

Founded by sisters Corinna and Theresa Williams, Celsious aimed to offer something different: a community gathering space where you can grab an espresso with a bite of delicious pastries in the morning, join for a movie screening in the evening, all while doing your laundry using environmentally friendly cleaning products and energy-efficient washing machines. Unfortunately, like with many other businesses, COVID-19 disrupted the sisters’ plans.

As an essential service, Celsious has remained open throughout the state’s social distancing orders. Bustle caught up with Corinna and Theresa as they were reopening Celsious to regular hours, on the heels of a curfew put in place by the NYC mayor’s office. NYC curfew lasted a week following nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism.

Check it out!

In early February, we ventured out to see if we could clean a small section of a subway platform in a way that, at the very least, left us with a satisfying before & after image. Not fully satisfied, however, filmmaker Jeff Seal set out on an even bigger cleaning project, returning to the High Street station in Brooklyn in a Hazmat suit, and testing out several other products.

Check it out!

So there we were, looking down at our chosen section of platform, hoping to reveal what was at the bottom of these layers of grime. We guessed the first coating was from the '70s, at least, but this could go back as far as 1933 when the station first opened. The dirt is really baked in there—so much so that the surface seemed impenetrable. No amount of elbow grease seemed like it was going to make a dent, but Jeff got down there and gave it a shot.

If you've ever spent some time marveling at the Main Concourse inside Grand Central Terminal, you may have noticed a small rectangular dark patch high on the ceiling. At first glance, it looks like it could be a vent, or panel of some sort, but it is really just an uncleaned patch of dirt that tells a bit of history about the building. Watch this short video from Gothamist to learn why.

On the constellation-filled ceiling of Grand Central's main concourse, there's a small dark patch at the edge where the mural and marble meet, in the northwest corner. That dark patch is an homage of sorts to this dirty ol' town—it was darkened through decades of exposure to a few pollutants, but mainly cigarette smoke. When the ceiling was finally cleaned in the mid-1990s, a decision was made to leave this small 9" x 18" rectangle untouched. The result is the city's most satisfying before & after.
