According to Feeding America, there are 42 million people facing hunger in the United States, with 1.4 million being in New York City alone. Astonishingly, research shows about 40% of the food produced in America today goes to waste; this is equivalent to 70 billion tons. Our goal is make sure the wholesome excess food gets to hungry mouths.

Here is our simple step-by-step guide to volunteering on Thanksgiving Day in New York City:

Don't volunteer on Thanksgiving Day.

Volunteer on literally any other day of the year.

That's it! Really simple! While your heart may be in the right place, 10-20 times more people volunteer on Thanksgiving Day versus any other day. Kitchens and shelters often have to turn volunteers away because there is not enough work or room to support every one who wants to help.

Ask yourself whether or not you are volunteering to make yourself feel good about doing it, or to really make a difference by providing a service to those in need. If the answer is the latter, you can make a bigger difference volunteering on any of the 364 other days where the help is needed most.

Head to NYC Service to learn more about how you can get involved in New York City volunteer service year round.

The 2018 New York City Taxi Drivers Calendar, a comedic take on the traditional pin-up, features 12 of the city's most scintillating and good-humored yellow cab drivers.

The calendar is a fundraiser for University Settlement, a non-profit organization based in the Lower East Side that provides quality education, housing, recreation and wellness opportunities, and literacy programs to immigrants and working individuals in need of assistance. A portion of the $14.99 calendar proceeds go directly to the organization.

Coup is an interesting cocktail bar in the East Village in Cooper Square that donates 100% of its profits to non-profit organizations that have been defunded by the Trump administration. Each drink you order gets you a token that you can deposit into one of the non-profit organization stacks around the restaurant. There are 6 organizations to choose from every month, and the more tokens one gets, the higher the percentage of the bar's profits it receives.

A coup is generally defined as the violent seizure of the government by its people. But what does one call it when the people are violently seized by its government? We call it an opportunity for revolution. From the mind of owner of Ravi DeRossi and bartenders Sother Teague and Max Green, and inspired by the current political climate of today, springs Coup – a cocktail bar designed to satisfy that aching desire to rise up and DO SOMETHING. Coup is a new cocktail bar in the heart of the East Village designed to donate 100% of its profits to charities, organizations and campaigns under attack by the current presidential administration. Coup features an innovative cocktail menu, celebrity guest bartenders, and a tip-free employment policy that allows each guest to take a stand, while taking a sip.

Back in the early 1980s, when the New York City subway was a dirty, grimy, and crime-ridden place, the red-beret wearing Guardian Angels would protect commuters by establish a presence on the subway that the police could not, or would not, give. In this video from BRIC TV, watch as the group's founder Curtis Sliwa explains the origins of the Guardian Angels.

Curtis Sliwa, Founder & CEO of the Guardian Angels, shares with us his experience on why public safety is a necessity on the boardwalk of Luna Park after witnessing a brutal gang-related attack on a teenage boy.

Hearty Start is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York City that provides a unique service that helps both the homeless, and the struggling mom-and-pop bodegas in the City. The organization provides breakfast sandwiches from local bodegas to homeless New Yorkers every morning, using funds you have donated on a monthly subscription basis.

You can donate as low as one $3 sandwich a year, up to dozens of sandwiches per week, and you get to choose Egg and Cheese, the classic Bacon, Egg and Cheese, or the blasphemous Sausage, Egg and Cheese. You get the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to alleviate hunger within the homeless community, and support local bodegas which are constantly threatened by rising rents. Win-win for a few bucks a month.

Head over to the donation page to get started.
