In March 2021, former Wall Street Journal writer Neil King Jr. embarked on a walk of 330 miles, from his home in Washington, D.C., to New York City – his way of contemplating America, past and present, and, at 61, his own life after surviving esophageal cancer. The 26-day journey formed the basis of his new book, "American Ramble: A Walk of Memory and Renewal." He retraced his steps with correspondent Martha Teichner, and talked about the America he found along the way.

Writer Ashley Ford approaches her work with intelligence, humor, openness—and vulnerability, an element that also proves important in her home. “To me, home is your safest space. And I don’t mean safety in terms of a bubble or something that keeps danger out. But just a place where you feel free to be yourself. Free to love and be loved,” Ashley says. ” . . . Home is for you to be vulnerable.”

Ashley’s writing covers topics including bodies (and feelings about bodies), Black Girl Magic and queer identity. Right now, Ashley is the host of PROFILE by BuzzFeed News, an “interview show bringing you the biggest names in news and entertainment right now.” She’s also working on writing her memoir, Somebody’s Daughter, which will be published by Flatiron Books. Her work has been featured in an impressive roster of publications, like Allure, ELLE, BuzzFeed, SELF, Slate, Teen Vogue, and The Cut. She’s been on Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list, Brooklyn Magazine‘s Brooklyn 100 list, and been one of Time Out New York’s New Yorkers of The Year.

Check out the video's accompanying interview for more on writer Ashley Ford, her partner Kelly Stacy, and her comfy Brooklyn home.

They recently had a voting period and after over 50,000 votes, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah was chosen as the inaugural selection.

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

Fortune cookies are undoubtedly the best part of a meal at a Chinese restaurant, but the treats also carry with them a bit of mystique: Who writes the fortunes that grace the end of your meal with a little bit of wisdom? And could that possibly be their fulltime job? The Eater video team sat down with Donald Lau, Chief Fortune Writer at Wonton Food Inc. who has been at the job for over three decades, as well as his successor (Donald plans to retire at the end of this year), to learn about what it takes to write fortunes for a living.

Our friends at Ephemeral New York recently dug up this great print from 1930 showing author and poet Edgar Allan Poe walking across The Bronx's High Bridge.

After he moved from a farmhouse in today’s Upper West Side to a wooden cottage in rural Fordham (below), Poe regularly journeyed across the High Bridge, opened in 1848, two and a half miles from his home. […] In the last melancholy years of his life—’the lonesome latter years’—Poe was accustomed to walk there at all times of the day and night; often pacing the then solitary pathways for hours without meeting a human being

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most well-known American authors of the 19th century. When his wife became ill with Tuberculosis, Poe moved his family up to the small Village of Fordham in Westchester County, better known today as The Bronx.

Edgar Allan Poe spent the last years of his life, from 1846 to 1849, in The Bronx at Poe Cottage, now located at Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. A small wooden farmhouse built about 1812, the cottage once commanded unobstructed vistas over the rolling Bronx hills to the shores of Long Island. It was a bucolic setting in which the great writer penned many of his most enduring poetical works, including “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells” and “The Cask of Amontillado.”

Poe's cottage in The Bronx still exists today as a museum. Check it out in person for free Thursday through Sunday.
