The New York Public Library is your partner in helping young children grow up to be strong readers and thinkers. Through this album, we focus on singing as a wonderful way for parents, caregivers, and librarians to bond with children and help them become self-confident, curious, and intrepid learners with a lifelong love of reading. Use this webpage to learn about the important developmental skill each song represents and how easily you can reinforce these skills every day with your child.

The New York we know and love is one click away: cabs honking, pigeons cooing, bike messengers whizzing by, strangers gossiping, the hum of a local library. Anywhere you are can now become the city—all you need is Missing Sounds of New York, The New York Public Library’s new album.

A new immersive experience, the album is a collection of audio landscapes that evoke some of the sounds of New York City. Missing Sounds of New York, a partnership with creative agency Mother New York, is a love letter to NYC, connecting New Yorkers around the familiar sounds of urban life that they love and miss during this unprecedented time of social separation.

In the world of audio engineering, there is a massive gender gap. In 2016, only 7 percent of the Audio Engineering Society’s members were women. Within this industry, Emily Lazar has been blazing a trail forward. Having recorded over 2,000 albums with artists like David Bowie, the Foo Fighters and Madonna, the Grammy-nominated engineer is making space for more women in the booth.

Created by native Staten Islander and videographer Matthew Chirico (previously), the video is a stunning collection of birds-eye views of places on Staten Island you don't normally get to see from that angle. Check it out with headphones!

Sounds of New York is our tribute to a city we love. We spent months capturing the buzz and energy of New York City's neighborhoods and present it to you as ambient noise to help you focus while you work It’s ambient noise for you to play in the background while you’re working. We just happened to curate these particular background sounds from famous locations throughout NYC neighborhoods.

So far there are 25 Manhattan neighborhoods included, but they plan on adding more from all around the City in the coming months. Check out the full site to listen in on your neighborhood.
