Step inside a slice of vanishing New York history with artist John Willenbecher, who has occupied the same spacious Tribeca loft for over 50 years. A self taught painter and assemblage artist, Willenbecher offers a rare glimpse into a bohemian lifestyle that once defined the downtown creative scene. Throughout the film, he reflects on his journey from a young art history student to a staple of the city’s gallery circuit, sharing personal stories about legendary neighbors and the evolving landscape of his historic building. This portrait captures the spirit of a true New York original who remains dedicated to his craft and the simple, fortunate life he built for himself in the heart of the city.

Focusing on themes including Black resilience, love and care, Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist Na’ye Perez deconstructs his memory-laden artistic process and explains the work’s connection to the late Pop Smoke. Titled after the Pop Smoke song, this work can be viewed as an ode to the meteoric rise of the hip hop star and his recent tragic death at the age of 20. What You Know About Love… can be viewed in the BRIC House Hallway until August 28, 2022. Produced by Kaykay Sublime and Kecia Élan Cole.

Alyssa says that her

...intent is to transcend both my subject and the paint itself. I aim to discover something that resonates as deeply as my often-vulnerable inner experience. Transferring an expression of this human experience to someone who will really open and relate to it creates human connection.

In the video, she goes on to explain

We need to feel like we belong to this experience, we need to know our place, we need to know where we fit. We need to feel that we're accepted for who we are. So the goal you may think is to, get a show, get press or to make money or to have fame. But it's not, the thing we all really want is to feel connected.

Alyssa paints out of her amazing Brooklyn studio.

This is the illustrated story of New York artist Chris Daze Ellis’s successful transition from the subways to international studios and galleries. Follow his 30+ year career from his days as a teenage graffiti writer to his current life as a professional painter, mentor, and family man. This book, with more than 250 photographs, is a journey tracking the seminal moments in Daze’s life that shaped his art. View his aesthetic evolution, from “Graffiti High” (New York’s High School of Art and Design) and an “unsanctioned” street art phase to exhibitions with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Train photos from the 1970s and ’80s, a broad representation of Daze’s studio and mural works, and personal photos guide the reader through an artistic portfolio spanning five decades. Contributions by graffiti writer Jay “J.SON” Edlin and essayist Claire Schwartz, and a foreword by graffiti historian and chronicler Sacha Jenkins, complete this volume.

Learn more about DAZE on his website and purchase the book for just $34 on Amazon.
