Join actor Christopher Meloni and his artist wife Sherman Meloni as they provide a tour of their unique duplex penthouse in the West Village of New York City. The couple transformed two separate apartments into one expansive, art-filled home featuring a custom-built spiral staircase by Gabrielle Shelton. The tour highlights their love for natural materials like different marbles and woods, seen in custom pieces such as a dining table by Tucker Robbins. Their eclectic art collection includes a profound sculpture by Beth Carter and a vibrant Keith Haring print, alongside portraits of their children painted by Sherman. Christopher shares personal anecdotes, from his daughter's demo party that turned into a rave to his own sculpting hobby and a cherished, handmade "Elvis Costello" bookend. The home also boasts a private gym, an art studio, an espresso room, and 270-degree views of the Manhattan skyline from their primary bedroom and expansive terrace.

Nestled in Brooklyn, "The Candy Factory" is a fascinating artist enclave thriving thanks to the unconventional guidance of Ann Valentine. Originally purchasing the former confectionary factory in 1979, Ann has cultivated a unique microorganism of creativity, acting as a part-time landlady and part-time fairy godmother to the diverse group of artists who call this building home. Unlike many other studio spaces in the city, this community is defined by collaboration, support, and a genuinely loving atmosphere rather than strict financial metrics. With residents having stayed for decades, the building stands as a resilient testament to nurturing artistic passion amidst a rapidly changing city landscape.

“It seems funny to say it, but long before there was an ‘art world,’ there was art in the world.” So begins the artist and writer Russell Connor’s meditative tour of public art in New York City. In this time of social distancing, virtually wander the streets and parks of early 1970s Manhattan, from Grand Army Plaza to Wall Street. Local artists feature alongside works by Pablo Picasso, Louise Nevelson, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden and more.

Join Stephanie Herdrich, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Painting & Drawing, Caroline Corbeau-Parsons, Curator of Drawings and Paintings, Musée D’Orsay, Paris, and Paul Perrin, Director of Conservation and Collections, Musée D’Orsay,Paris, to virtually explore Sargent and Paris.

Sargent and Paris explores the early career of American painter John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), from his arrival in Paris in 1874 as a precocious 18-year-old art student through the mid-1880s, when his infamous portrait Madame X was a scandalous success at the Paris Salon. Over the course of one extraordinary decade, Sargent achieved recognition by creating boldly ambitious portraits and figure paintings that pushed the boundaries of conventionality.

Immersed in a cosmopolitan circle of artists, writers, and patrons, Sargent was able to navigate a successful path through the French exhibition system while achieving acclaim and awards. Beyond the portrait studio, he traveled in search of inspiration for his art—finding subjects in Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and North Africa. This exhibition gathers Sargent’s diverse works from this period to illuminate his path to becoming an artist, which was indelibly shaped by his experiences in the French capital. These visually stunning works provide a compelling view of the Paris art world of the late 19th century.

The iconic Madame X, a beloved highlight of The Met collection, is the culmination of Sargent’s early years in Paris. The exhibition will take an in-depth look at this captivating portrait and the numerous preparatory sketches, and it will be displayed alongside select portraits of Parisiennes by Sargent’s contemporaries.

Welcome to Jenkem Tries, a new video series where I, your editor Ben, try out the hobbies, hustles and pastimes of my friends and fellow skaters. For our inaugural episode, we’re looking into wheatpasting. Wheatpasting is a form of street art used by the smallest of creatives to the largest of advertisers, one that is so accessible that it only takes children's glue, water, and notebook paper in its simplest form. Intrigued, our editor Ben found a longtime NYC wheatpaster, Timothy Hutto, to take us through the motions.

What can a painting tell us about the life it’s led? Come behind the scenes to paintings conservation to discover the journey “Three Musicians,” one of Pablo Picasso’s most notable Cubist works, took, from a garage studio, through World War II, to MoMA. “The back of the painting really acts in a way like its passport. A work like this really shows you, even if it's a single artist who produces the work, there are so many other people who are involved in that painting's life.”
