Many of their recorded stories end up becoming animated, like this one entitled Clean Streets, in which two long-time partners recount fondly on their time together working as garbage collectors for the Department of Sanitation in the West Village.

Sanitation workers Angelo Bruno and Eddie Nieves worked together for nearly ten years on the same garbage route in Manhattan's West Village and became fixtures in the community. After 31 years on the job, Angelo retired. At StoryCorps, he talked with Eddie about the unexpected lessons he learned along the way and what he still misses about the job.

In 2016, French filmmakers Claire & Max created this unique short film which imagines the entirety of New York City as a gigantic film set made up of fake building facades and props.

New York City. A switch noise and day appears instantly. This New-York is different: it’s a huge movie set with only facades without depth. Here, all people have a strange characteristic: a confusing and mesmerizing one… But what are we really?

Check out Claire & Max's technical writeup on how they achieved the look and feel of this film.

The team at Blank on Blank recently uncovered a 1957 audio interview with iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright in which he discusses how arrogance and greed built the NYC skyline, then turned the audio into a great animated short.

As part of our special series, The Experimenters, where we’re uncovering interviews with the icons of science, technology, and innovation, we found this 1957 interview with Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s part of a collection at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin celebrating The Mike Wallace Interview, a TV program that ran back in the late ‘50s. Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs and style seem very nice, very clean now, but at the time, he was a controversial personality. And like most famous architects, his work was as much hated as respected. And that’s what Mike Wallace wanted to talk about.

The level of animated detail in the subway is fantastic, and the advertisements and sounds of the real NYC subway make it feel authentic.

“In my time, women usually had their life stories written for them. But I didn’t like the story I was given, so I wrote a new one.”

That’s Nellie Bly, the nom de plume of Elizabeth Cochrane. The story she wrote—in a newspaper in 1887, and, figuratively, of her life—would change the course of journalism in America.

A new short film from Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting brings Bly’s intrepid spirit to life. Nellie Bly Makes the News is an inventive and wildly entertaining account of the late reporter’s pioneering work in investigative journalism. The film’s director, Penny Lane, uses animation and a mix of documentary-style and reenacted interviews—drawn from primary sources, including Bly’s own writing and published interviews—to tell the story of a dynamic woman whose reportage is still being emulated today.

Check out the video's accompanying article or more on the incredible story of 19th century New York journalist Nellie Bly.

The New York City subway map designers at the MTA have a tough task: to show the breadth of all the City's lines in a relatively small sized, rectangular map. The problem is that the City just isn't rectangular at all. Redditor and data visualization guru Richie Gelles created this great animated GIF showing the New York City subway map in its compressed form, versus a similar map that covers the actual geographic distance.

The official subway map simultaneously expands the area for Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn and compresses the outer reaches of the system in Queens, outer Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Definitely makes it more legible though, following the actual geography the whole Financial District is an incomprehensible blob of stations.
