In case you have been in a coma for a few months, mega-corporation Amazon has selected New York City as one of the locations for its second headquarters, and it's causing a lot of waves. Many people think that the city provided too many tax breaks to the company. But, the New York City Economic Development Corporation says that the city has the potential to get $13.5 billion in tax revenue from the deal, producing this video to show off how we could use that money for good. Check it out.

This is the largest single effort to attract new jobs in New York State history. It is projected to deliver over $186 billion in economic impact to New York over the next 25 years, including over $14B in tax returns to the State and over $13.5B to the City.

Over the past five years, policies set forth by Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor de Blasio have reduced veteran homelessness by 90% in New York City, with 1,600 vets off the street in the past year alone.

On Veterans day we honor heroes like Andre Sylvain, a former Combat Engineer in the United States Army and one of the many veterans who New York City has helped find a home. In the last five years, NYC has reduced veteran homelessness by over 90% and, since last Veterans day, has placed over 1,600 homeless veterans into permanent affordable housing.

Usually, the apartment hunting process is ruled by money, but Hunt doesn't want finances to be a barricade to meeting the right roommates and making new friends, especially in a neighborhood where a room typically costs $1,800. “I’m taking affordability out of the equation completely by offering the rooms for just $1 a month,” he said. “I’d rather choose people based on how well we get along, not how much they can afford."

Luckily, real-estate blog 6sqft mapped out all of the current lotteries so you can see exactly where they all are.

The number of affordable rental units up for grabs through the city and state’s housing lotteries has been on the upswing. […] To stay on top of it all, 6sqft gathered all affordable housing buildings now accepting applicants and compiled them into one handy, interactive map.

Starting in February, the walls of some of New York’s housing projects will look a little brighter. The City Council, spearheaded by Councilman Ritchie Torres, just earmarked $500,000 to install murals in public housing—and to pay residents to design and paint them. […] In a housing project in each of the five boroughs, residents between the ages of 16 and 24 will be paired up with local Groundswell artists to create murals that reflect the issues the people in their buildings are facing. They’ll install three murals in each building.

Housing New York is a ten year plan to build or preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing in New York City, brought to you by the de Blasio administration.

Affordable housing is part of the bedrock of what makes New York City work. It's what underpins the economically diverse neighborhoods New Yorkers want to live in. It's critical to providing financial stability for working families, helping them get ahead and build a better life.

In this video from the Mayor's Office, we see how the city invested 3.1 million into the Navy Yard Housing Development to address badly-needed repairs.

Our promise to create or preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing over 10 years isn't a story that's told in statistics and numbers. It's a story that's told in the positive effects it has on people's lives. Watch Sheryl's story to see what our housing plan has meant for the families living in the Navy Yard Development in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Visit the program page for more information about Housing New York and specific projects.
