The Building of a Community is a documentary produced by Colectivo Piloto and the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space about activist history and community in the Lower East Side.

With its long and continuing history as a haven for immigrants, artists, musicians, poets, and political activists, the Lower East Side has been a cultural incubator since its earliest days. Ideas, movements, trends and customs that derive from either old or new world cultures, or both, emerged and radiated from here.

Miriam Weiskind gave up her career as an art director to bake pizza out of her tiny one bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, baking pizza was the one thing, aside from running, that gave her hope. She’s been slinging small batch pies out of her apartment since. Miriam loves the art of pizza making and is determined to share it with those who need it most; she sells her pizzas on a donation-based model and offers free pies to front-line workers, those laid off in the pandemic, or for anyone who simply needs it. Her signature pies include classic New York style pizza, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, a Sicilian pie that’s an ode to Michael Jordan, and even a pineapple pizza with a Jewish twist.

Actors Jane Alexander and America Ferrera will voice Susan B. Anthony, Viola Davis and Zoe Saldana will voice Sojourner Truth, and Meryl Streep and Rita Moreno will voice Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Monumental Women, also known as the Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund, is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to placing the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument, the first statue honoring women's history in New York City's Central Park.
