You might be familiar with the music of cellist-singer Gabriel Royal if you have paid attention while waiting for an L train in Brooklyn. Royal was playing on the Subway platform at Bedford Ave when manager Beto Landau first heard him too. They two teamed up to produce an album together, and have captivated people with Gabriel’s sound ever since.

I’ll be in someones band as a backup vocalist, as the backup dancer, whatever I need to do, I’m doing it. But I can take the lead too, because I’m a songwriter. I mean music is my life. It’s my job, it’s my passion, it’s what I do for fun. It’s funny how much joy I gain from playing music.

Brooklyn Plans to Celebrate Captain America With a 13-Foot-Tall Bronze Statue

Captain America is turning 75 this year and Brooklyn plans to honor his legacy by erecting a giant bronze statue.

Marvel Comics is sending the 13-foot-tall bronze Captain America statue to Prospect Park for a dedication ceremony on August 10th after being part of the San Diego Comic-Con.

For the past 75 years, Captain America has inspired generations of fans serving as the ultimate global icon for freedom, strength and doing the right thing.

The statue will feature the movie quote “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn” — from the movie Captain America: The First Avenger.

Forgotten Tunnel in Midtown Connects Penn Station With The New Yorker Hotel

Hidden deep in the basement of the 1929 Art Deco Wyndham New Yorker Hotel, there is a secret tunnel that leads directly to Penn Station. The tunnel originally allowed guests of the hotel to directly enter and exit the hotel through the tunnel and gave them easy and direct access to the Subway.

There is still over 120 feet of tunnel here in the original Art Deco style. The design of the hallway also takes inspiration from Mayan culture, with some of the wall tiles contain Mayan symbols. The New Yorker Hotel is filled to the brim with history, something that both Kinney and the establishment hope to make more popular.

Meet Steve Powers: An Esteemed Street Artist, Writer, and Sign Painter From BK

Sign painter, writer, and Brooklyn resident Steve Powers has created signs all over the world. He has been painting in Brooklyn in the mid ‘90s, starting out with graffiti, then murals, signs, and more recently, a job at the Brooklyn Museum.

I always knew it was a special place but being able to work at the Brooklyn Museum allows you to see how many people are really impacted.

Stephen Powers also has ICY SIGNS, his studio on 4th Avenue and Bergen Street in Boerum Hill / Park Slope.

Take a Look At The Seventh Annual Showcase of Outdoor Murals In Astoria

On June 11th, the Welling Court Mural Project debuted for the seventh time and showed off an amazing collection of street art. Talented artists from all around the world and directly from the neighborhood got together and and created over 130 new murals to look at.

Covering a multi-block section along Welling Court in Astoria, Queens, the Project is a collaboration between the Ad Hoc Art Collective of Bushwick and the local community. The artists on view span a total of 50 years of street art history, from such graffiti pioneers as DAZE and CRASH to the members of youth development organization Cre8tive YouTh*ink.

Be sure to go and check them all out at Welling Court in Astoria, Queens.

Will More Restaurants In NYC Adapt The New Included Tipping Trend?

Instead of tipping the standard 15-20%, hospitality is now included into the bill of some New York City restaurants. By eliminating the need to tip it is possible to provide just genuine hospitality and it is more beneficial not only to the front of the house but also to the back of the house. Everybody is guaranteed a living wage and knows exactly how much they can expect on their paycheck.

However, many waiters and waitress still rely on the cash tips they get and it is still unclear whether or not it is advantageous to absorb them into a paycheck, so it is questionable whether or not this trend will last.

A number of restaurants in New York City are attempting to make a major change in their business model, and if this becomes widespread it will have an impact on the way all of us dine. To deal with rising costs and a more in-demand labor force, a few trailblazing eateries are doing away with the time-tested gratuity model.

This is only an experiment in a handful of restaurants right now, but if it works out you can stop worrying about how much you should tip the waiter.
