The New York Times recently released a mini-documentary titled When Linsanity Happened that details the cultural impact of Taiwanese-American basketball phenomenon, Jeremy Lin.

Madison Square Garden set the stage in for his rise to fame and basketball dominance during his 2012 stint with the New York Knicks, and now Lin has returned to New York City, playing it Barclay's Center with the New York Nets instead.

Lin has returned to the public eye here in New York as he prepares to begin his first season as a member of the Nets. His narrative continues to resonate with Asian-Americans, in part, because of the way his skin color has shaped the substance of his life.

With a handful of Asian-American influencers from journalist to artists, the mini-doc skillfully recounts the instances of significant cultural contribution Lin ignited not only in the boroughs of New York City, but nationwide as well.

The AFROPUNK Festival returns to Brooklyn this summer with a notable line up including George Clinton, Ice Cube, Janelle Monae, and Earl Sweatpants, just a few of the names that show the diversity of musicians gracing the stage during the 2-day festival.

Described by The New York Times as “the most multicultural festival in the US,” it promises an eclectic line-up and an audience as diverse as the acts they come to see. More than just a weekend, as the AFROPUNK movement expands into international terrain, experiencing it on its home turf makes AFROPUNK Brooklyn that much more special.

The Festival revisits Commodore Barry Park this August and will run the 27th & 28th.
New York City native and professional photographer Luis Pons uses photography as a tool for self healing. While showcasing his creativity through capturing ballerinas against an NYC backdrop, Pons finds self-clarity through this artistic expression.

Luis found what he was looking for in ballet photography. Taking ballerinas into the urban landscape of his city, Luis strives to capture the “beauty of dance outdoors and also say something deeply about [himself]” in each image.

What began as a form of self-healing for Pons has transformed into a form of unbelievable self-expression. Pons now captures some of NYC’s most notable ballerinas. Be sure to check out his gallery for more photos like these.

Thousands of the ubiquitous urban birds, outfitted with their own small LED lights, will take to the night sky above the Brooklyn Navy Yard each weekend between May 7 and June 12 as part of artist Duke Riley’s Fly by Night project, put on by public arts organization Creative Time.

Riley, who has been noted to have been raising pigeons since his 20's, is excited to see this project combining two of his favorite things come to life at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

If all goes according to plan, a brand new ornament may be added to the pedestrian plaza on 14th Street in Union Square. The 10-foot tall sculpture, depicting a female version of the Roman god Janus, would add a Romanesque flair to the already eccentric Union Square.

The piece, part of a larger exhibition by South African artist Lionel Smit called "Morphous", depicts Janus — whose two faces show his ability to see both the past and the future — as a woman of the Cape Malay community, a majority Muslim ethnic group in South Africa with roots in Southeast Asia.

Taken from a larger exhibit by South African artist, Lionel Smith, the two-faced sculpture is likely to replace the already standing “My Circle” sculpture in the middle of Union Square. If approved by the Parks Department, this carving could be installed as early as June 2016.

Displayed on the third floor gallery, Lawrence’s exhibit showcases a series of tempera paintings which embody the mass migration of Blacks to the North in the early 20th century.

The range of works in the exhibition sheds light on the ways in which Lawrence drew upon and transformed contemporary models for representing black experience in America.

The exhibitions runs until September 7th, 2015.
