Opening officially in 1839, Union Square is one of the oldest parks and transportation hubs in New York City. It has gone through many configurations and iterations of design, but the one seen here in this vintage photograph from 1890 was designed by famed park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1872. We see the east side for the park here, looking north up Park Avenue with all of its trollys and carriages. Check out the specimen page on the Library of Congress for more information on the photograph.
