New York City: Winter Nights, an Amazing Photo Essay by Vivienne Gucwa

Vivienne Gucwa takes amazing photos all around New York for her photo blog NY Through the Lens, and she has even released a collection of her best shots as a coffee-table photo book of the same name. You can purchase her best-selling book NY Through the Lens on Amazon for just $22.

I have been photographing New York City during snowstorms at night for the past 5 years. When it comes to experiencing New York City in the snow, I relish the challenge. The more gusty and snowy the storm, the more of a chance that I will be out in it traipsing around New York City with my cameras in tow.

This series of photos comes from Gucwa's New York City: Winter Nights photo essay.

Winter nights open their arms up to those who walk through city streets strewn with glinting white embers...

...alabaster sparks left over from clenched-fist hopes that burst from eager palms onward and upwards into the sky.

And we walk through the city like somnambulists moving through an otherworldly landscape...

gliding through the white remnants of dream-laden clouds towards street lights that hang over streets like stars leading our way back to the places we rest our heads.

Winter nights are when nostalgia wraps around you like a blanket

as memories and longing fill the air the same memories and longing that you feel on snowy walks back home...

There is something undeniably magical that occurs as snow falls

swirling and twirling in the air until it hits the ground heavy with the weight of a thousand promises as the street lights renders each flake immortal like stardust left over from supernovas.

It’s moments like these that the world stops rotating long enough as every breath reverberates alongside the earth’s heartbeat...

...and we move through the city relishing a chance to be enveloped by the sinking, seductive embrace of serenity as the city dreams along with us.
