This great vintage photograph from 1918 shows underneath the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, and appears looking west towards the rest of Manhattan. A sunny, foggy day provides a super moody shadow cast over the empty lots, telephone poles, dirt roads and horse buggies. Unfortunately this whole area has since been filled with on and off-ramps for cars, and various NYC storage lots. Here is a Google StreetView of approximately the same view today:
